Historical Background of Israel Army

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) originated from Jewish paramilitary organisations during the New Yishuv period, starting with the Second Aliyah (1904-1914). Early groups included "Mahane Yehuda" (1891), HaMagen (1915-1917), and HaNoter (1912-1913). Bar-Giora, founded in 1907, was transformed into Hashomer in 1909, operating until 1920. After the 1920 Palestine riots, the Yishuv leadership established the Haganah in June 1920, which became a full-scale defence force by the 1936-1939 Arab revolt. The Yishuv's involvement in World War I and World War II further strengthened its military, leading to the Jewish Brigade.

Following Israel's Declaration of Independence, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion officially formed the IDF on May 26, 1948, integrating all other Jewish armed groups, including Irgun and Lehi. The IDF was organised during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, forming twelve brigades, some of which remain today. The IDF's first significant post-independence test was the 1956 Suez Crisis. In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Golan Heights. Subsequent conflicts, such as the Yom Kippur War and engagements with the PLO, refined the IDF's strategies and capabilities. The IDF has faced various conflicts, including urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations like the 1976 Operation Entebbe and the bombing of Iraq's nuclear reactor. It was involved in the Lebanese Civil War and maintained a security zone in South Lebanon for 25 years.

Recently, the IDF has focused on Palestinian militancy, Hezbollah, and operations like Defensive Shield, Pillar of Defence, Protective Edge, and Guardian of the Walls. The IDF's Code of Ethics reflects responses to these threats. The IDF has faced accusations of war crimes and human rights violations, including excessive use of force and unlawful killings, as noted by a 2017 Human Rights Watch report.
