Preparing for design entrance examinations requires more than drawing skills. Students also need to develop reasoning, observation, creativity, and the ability to understand what a question demands. Balancing these areas while preparing for multiple examinations can be challenging.
The journey of PW NID Mains Topper Kaushik Kushal Bhoi offers useful insights into this process. He secured Rank 5 in NID Mains and also qualified UCEED, receiving admission to IIT Delhi. His experience highlights how consistent practice, mock test analysis, an open learning mindset, and the right guidance can help students prepare for design entrance examinations.
Kaushik initially joined engineering coaching during Classes 11 and 12. However, he felt it was a race in which he could not stand out. He had first come across UCEED back in Class 9, during the lockdown, while researching online, and this later led him to try design. His interest in fine arts and the connection between design, technology, and problem-solving encouraged him to pursue this field.
Explaining how he discovered design as a career option, Kaushik shared:
"Jab lockdown vagairah laga tha to maine research karta tha to us pe UCEED ke exam ke baare mein pata chala hai ki IITs jaane ka ek aur bhi way hai UCEED jo ki design ke through."
This discovery helped him explore an alternative route to IITs that matched his interests. After completing Class 12, he took a gap year to prepare for design entrance examinations.
He also explained what made the field interesting to him:
"Toh ye kaafi bahut interesting bhi laga. And upar se technology bhi iske saath mein juda hua hai. Toh mere liye ye stream, ye branch bahut best laga. Toh isiliye main socha ki ise pursue karta hoon."
His interest in combining design with technology became an important reason for choosing this path. Instead of continuing with a field that did not feel right for him, he explored an option that suited his interests and strengths.
After choosing design, Kaushik had to prepare for different examinations while improving his existing skills. Although drawing was one of his strengths, he needed to work on fundamentals such as perspective, proportions, and visual reasoning.
He explained why he did not follow a rigid daily study schedule:
"Sir, schedule kuch matlab aise toh nahi tha ki means ki time to time ke beech mein aisa kuch padhna hai. Toh means ki design ek aisa field hai ki aapko ekdum free rehna hai."
His approach focused on keeping his mind open while maintaining consistency. He practised regularly instead of forcing himself to follow a fixed timetable for every activity.
Kaushik also identified an area that required more effort during his UCEED preparation:
"And wahi matlab ki UCEED mein ek part hai ki woh spatial reasoning vagairah ki visualise karna, wahi hai ki woh thoda sa difficult padta tha."
Spatial reasoning required him to imagine objects, rotate them mentally, and understand them from different perspectives. Since these questions took more time, he used tricks to approach them during examinations. His experience shows why students should identify their weaker areas instead of focusing only on the subjects they already enjoy.
Kaushik's NID Mains Preparation Strategy involved regular practice, previous-year questions (PYQs), mock tests, and careful analysis. He worked on different parts of the examinations rather than relying on one preparation method.
Discussing his approach to UCEED, he explained:
"Toh phir UCEED ke liye maine bas woh PYQs vagairah hi solve kiya starting se lekar end tak, means ki exam se pehle tak maine sirf PYQ solve kiya."
He also practised previous-year papers for other design entrance examinations. He mentioned solving UCEED papers approximately three to four times and CEED papers around one to three times. These were part of his personal preparation routine, not a fixed requirement for every aspirant.
Kaushik emphasised that solving questions alone was not enough. He explained how reviewing performance helped him identify mistakes:
"Aap wapas se usko analysis karo. Find out karo kahan pe mistake tha. Kya kahan nahi tha, kahan pe aur improve karna chahiye tha."
This process helped him understand where he needed to improve and how he could use his time more effectively. His preparation also included daily drawing practice, such as creating objects and scenes, to improve line quality and other fundamentals.
His experience offers several practical NID exam preparation tips:
Practise previous-year questions regularly.
Attempt mock tests and review mistakes after each test.
Work on drawing fundamentals and spatial reasoning.
Prepare for all relevant subjects instead of predicting the paper.
Maintain consistency without making preparation unnecessarily rigid.
Along with his individual practice, Kaushik used PW's learning support to strengthen his preparation. He specifically mentioned faculty videos, mock test feedback, drawing-question reviews, and online classes as useful parts of his learning experience.
Talking about the support he received for UCEED Part A, he said:
"Mujhe Amardeep sir ne bahut zyada help kiya hai. Main honestly bataun toh sabse zyada jinka videos dekha woh Amardeep sir ka hi video dekha hai bahut zyada."
He expressed his gratitude to the faculty member for helping him work through the part of the examination that many design aspirants find challenging.
Kaushik also highlighted the value of receiving feedback on his practice work:
"Mocks vagairah jitna bhi sab tha, maine sab banaya jo ki aap check karte the."
He further explained that reviews on his uploaded drawing work and guidance during classes helped him understand his performance. He also attended Saksi Ma'am's Zoom classes and used the tips she shared about preparation.
His experience shows how faculty guidance, practice opportunities, and feedback can complement a student's independent efforts. However, consistent practice and the willingness to analyse mistakes remained important parts of his own preparation.
Kaushik's journey demonstrates the value of balancing different preparation areas. His advice was not to focus exclusively on drawing or ignore subjects that seemed difficult. Instead, he encouraged aspirants to prepare broadly and understand the requirements of each examination.
Reflecting on the importance of covering all subjects, he shared:
"Aap predict mat karo ki ye exam aise nahi ki aap prediction kar rahe ho PYQs laga ke ki ye aa sakta hai exam mein. Waise nahi karna. Mere ek senior ne bola tha ki please don't predict the paper. You have to prepare all of the subject."
He also stressed the importance of keeping an open mind while learning from different sources:
"Toh woh cheez hai ki ab kya knowledge achha hai kya nahi hai woh baad mein decide karna hai. Pehle jahan se knowledge aa raha hai aap lete raho."
These lessons reflect his approach to preparation: explore different sources, practise consistently, analyse performance, and avoid neglecting difficult areas. Students preparing for NID and UCEED can use these ideas to develop a balanced preparation strategy suited to their own strengths and weaknesses.
Kaushik also highlighted the importance of understanding the purpose behind each question. According to him, aspirants should identify whether a question tests perspective, creativity, observation, or another specific skill instead of trying to include everything in every answer.
PW NID Mains Topper Kaushik Kushal Bhoi's journey highlights the importance of consistent practice, mock test analysis, and balanced preparation for design entrance examinations. His experience also shows how faculty guidance and feedback can support independent learning. Aspirants preparing for NID and UCEED can learn from his approach by staying open to new knowledge, working on weaker areas, and understanding what each question demands.
