They are recognised or assigned as Circle Officers (C.O.) in a number of states, including Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. The subdivision is overseen by a DSP, also known as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer or SPDO in the state of West Bengal.

  • As the district's top intelligence officer, the DSP collects data from lower-level police officers and reports his findings to his superiors through the district police personnel system, in addition to supervising the service conditions of the younger officers under his command.
  • A DSP manages and controls the crowd during political rallies and functions to prevent clashes between people, as well as manages the crowd during a festival to maintain a healthy environment.
  • A DSP develops new methods to combat crime and apprehend criminals, and is responsible for deterring criminal activity, supervising all cases and investigations under his supervision, and conducting research operations to solve cases.
  • Another role is to manage and maintain law and order, as well as to take action against those who violate the law and order.
  • DSP also tries to build good community links and maintain communal harmony, sees if citizens follow the laws and takes necessary action against those who do not, and tries to build a good relationship between citizens and the police.

Eligibility for DSP

Because the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police is filled with responsibilities, it is critical to exercise caution when selecting one.

The criteria for becoming a DSP in India are listed below.

  • A person who wishes to become a DSP must have been born in India and be an Indian citizen.
  • To be eligible for this position, the applicant must be between the ages of 21 and 30. The candidate who belongs to the ST/SC category has a 5-year age relaxation.
  • The candidate must be a graduate of a reputable college or university in any field.
  • A male candidate's height must be at least 168cm, and a female candidate's height must be greater than 155cm.

Salary of DSP

In India, the average salary for a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) is around ₹1.5 lakh per year. However, this can vary depending on the state and city in which you work. Salary levels may be higher in larger cities and lower in smaller towns. 

DSPs (DM) earn between ₹53,100 and ₹1,67,800 per month. The DSP Salary is subject to the rules of the 7th pay scale in the following states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. 

Deputy superintendents (DSP) are currently state police officers who work for provincial police forces, either as direct entrants or as inspectors promoted to that rank.
