History of the Railway Recruitment Board
The
Railway Recruitment Board, or RRB, was established in 1942 under the name Railway Service Commission. In 1985, the Railway Service Commission was renamed the Railway Recruitment Board and is managed by the Ministry of Railways, under the Railway Recruitment Control Board.
What is the Role of RRB?
The Railway Recruitment Board is responsible for conducting various exams for non-technical posts, such as assistant loco pilot and group C and D posts, in addition to posts in other departments and offices that come under the Indian Railways.
The exams conducted under the RRB are as follows:
- RRB Group D
- RRB ALP
- RRB NTPC
- RRB JE
What is the RRB NTPC Exam?
RRB NTPC stands for “Railway Recruitment Board-Non-Technical Popular Categories.” This exam is held to appoint candidates as traffic apprentices, traffic assistants, commercial apprentices, and so on.
The basic requirement to appear for the RRB NTPC exam is a valid bachelor’s degree, whereas, for a certain position, a candidate can apply with a valid score in the senior secondary exam.

What is the RRB-JE Exam?
RRB-JE is an acronym that stands for "Railway Recruitment Board - Junior Engineer. "This exam is held to recruit candidates who have a science or engineering background and wish to apply for a technical post such as:
- Junior Engineer
- Junior Engineer (IT Post)
- Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (or CMA)
- Depot Material Superintendent (or DMS)
The minimum qualification required for this exam is a recognized bachelor’s degree in engineering, and the stages for this exam are as follows:
- Preliminary Exam (Computer Based Test, or CBT)
- Main Exam (Computer Based Test, or CBT)
- Document Verification
- medical fitness test
- Final Selection
What is the RRB ALP Exam?
The Railway Recruitment Board's Assistant Loco Pilot Exam is an exam held to recruit candidates under the Ministry of Railways.
The following criteria are required:
- The candidates should have passed matriculation and completed the course "Act Apprenticeship Industrial Training Institute," approved by NCVT or SCVT in the respective trade.
- Candidates with an AICTE-recognized diploma in electrical, electronics, mechanical, or automobile engineering are also eligible for the exam.
What is the RRB-Group D Exam?
The RRB-Group D exam is held on behalf of the Railway Recruitment Cell by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to recruit candidates for various posts such as:
- Track Maintainer Grade-IV
- Helper
- Assistant Pointsman
These posts are available in various departments of the Indian Railways in Level 1 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.
The following educational qualifications are required:
- must be a 10th pass (OR) ITI from institutions that are recognized by NCVT or SCVT.
- Or, the candidate should hold a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by the NCVT.
