CAT percentile is calculated by comparing the performance of a candidate with the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam in the same session. The percentile reflects the percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular score. The calculation is based on scaled scores after the normalization process, which ensures fairness across different exam sessions.
The general formula used for calculating the CAT percentile is:
Percentile (P) = (N–R)/N(N – R) / N(N–R)/N × 100
Where:
N = Total number of candidates who appeared in that section/session
R = Rank of the candidate based on the scaled score
This method ensures that the percentile accurately represents a candidate’s position among all test-takers in the same session.
The score vs percentile trend from previous CAT exams helps in understanding the marks required to reach specific percentile ranges. These trends offer a reference point for analysing difficulty levels across years and estimating expected percentile positions.

After the CAT 2025 result is announced, candidates who meet the required CAT cut-off set by various IIMs will be shortlisted for the next stages of the admission process. The respective IIMs will send interview calls directly through email or other official communication channels. The selection procedure differs across IIMs, but it generally includes the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI).
Several new IIMs participate in the Common Admission Process (CAP), which requires a separate registration once the CAP cut-off percentile is released by the coordinating IIM. The final selection for MBA admission is based on multiple parameters such as CAT score, academic record, work experience, academic diversity, gender diversity, and performance in WAT/GD/PI rounds. These components collectively determine the final merit list.
