UPSC GS Paper 1 Syllabus

UPSC GS Paper 1 Syllabus 2025: The notification of the UPSC exam has detailed the syllabus of GS Paper 1. The GS 1 Paper also known as UPSC Mains Paper II evaluates candidates on four key subjects. Around 20 questions will be asked in this paper having a weightage of 250 marks.

UPSC GS Paper 1 Syllabus 2025

As you start preparation for UPSC GS Paper 1, go through the syllabus first and have an idea of topics that must be studied. The UPSC General Studies I Paper is titled 'Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society. ' This paper is held next day after the UPSC Essay paper and its exam pattern is as follows:
  1. There are a total of 20 questions printed both in HINDI and in ENGLISH
  2. All questions are compulsory and candidates will have 3 hours to complete the paper.
  3. Answers to Question Nos. 1 to 10 should be in 150 words each.
  4. Answers to Questions Nos. 11 to 20 should be in 250 words each.
  5. Answers must be written in the medium authorised by the UPSC Admit Card which means candidates who have opted for 'Hindi' during the UPSC application can not write answers in English .
  6. Questions 1 to 10 are assigned 10 marks, whereas questions 11 to 20 are assigned 15 marks.

  • Distribution of Key Natural Resources across the world (including South Asia and the Indian sub-continent); factors responsible for the location of primary, secondary, and tertiary sector industries in various parts of the world (including India).
  • Important Geophysical Phenomena such as earthquakes, Tsunami, Volcanic activity, cyclones, etc., geographical features and their location-changes in critical geographical features (including water-bodies and ice-caps) and in flora and fauna and the effects of such changes.
4. Indian Society
  • Salient features of Indian Society, Diversity of India.
  • Role of Women and Women’s Organization, Population and Associated Issues, Poverty and Developmental issues, Urbanisation, their problems and their remedies.
  • Effects of Globalization on Indian society.
  • Social Empowerment , Communalism, Regionalism, Secularism.
