The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test. The Mains Examination is the second stage and plays a major role in determining a candidate's final rank.
UPSC Mains tests your knowledge, analytical ability, writing skills, and understanding of national and international issues. The syllabus covers a wide range of subjects, making it important for aspirants to understand the scope of each paper before starting preparation.
The UPSC Mains Examination consists of nine papers. Out of these, Paper A (Indian Language) and Paper B (English) are qualifying in nature. The remaining papers contribute to the final merit score.
You will study Essay, General Studies papers, and an Optional Subject of your choice in the UPSC Mains examination. These papers assess different abilities, including your writing skills, language proficiency, subject understanding, analytical thinking, and ability to present ideas clearly.
