Types of Stock Ticker Symbols

Different ticker symbols relate to different asset classes. For example, a company's classes will be attached to its suffix if it has multiple classes of shares that trade in the market.

Preferred Stock

Preferred stock of a firm may have the same ticker symbol as its regular stock, often with the suffix ".P" attached. For example, Microsoft Corp.'s preferred stock trades under the name MSFT.P.

Share the Voting Class

Certain ticker handles might reveal whether or not shares give their owners the ability to vote. Alphabet Inc.,  for example, the company that was once known as Google, has two types of stock: GOOG stock, which does not provide owners the ability to vote, and GOOGL stock, which does.

As an example, the Class A shares of Berkshire Hathaway, which are identified by the ticker BRK.A, provide their holders greater voting rights than the Class B shares, which are identified by the symbol BRK.B.

Modifiers

Modifiers can be appended to certain ticker symbols. On the NYSE, for example, a letter followed by a full stop indicates that the share belongs to a certain stock class. A fifth letter on the NASDAQ frequently suggests a share is part of a certain category. A "Y" suggests the corporation is a foreign entity that trades in the American markets, but a "Q" suggests that the company that owns the shares is facing bankruptcy processes.

How does one read the ticker, and what does it show?

• The first thing you'll notice is the ticker symbol, which is the arrangement of characters used to identify a corporation, as previously mentioned.

• The number of shares traded, expressed in thousands, millions, or billions, is also displayed by the ticker.

• The stock ticker also shows the price of each share for a particular trade.

• The price's shift in direction is displayed. Depending on whether the stock trades higher or lower than the price from the previous day at exit, the small arrow-like sign is used, and it may be pointing upward or downward. The precise price change is mentioned.
