What is the full form of BPL? BPL’s full form is Below the Poverty line. The Government of India has established this economic standard to identify low-income community residents in need of immediate government assistance. The government has set income limits. People whose earnings fall below the threshold are listed as BPL. According to the survey, about 30 percent of the population of India is BPL.

History

1.A Planning Commission working group, 1962, proposed the minimum amount of living expenses at Rs. 20 per person in rural communities and Rs. 25 per person in urban areas, except school and health care provided by the state government.

2.After the 1970s, the criterion was further adjusted because the lowest level of BPL is the minimum daily intake of Rs. 49.1 and Rs. 56.7 respectively.

3.In 1993, a group of experts divided the definition of the aggregate poverty line into a state-level definition, in which the poverty line was specified separately for each state.

4.The rural poverty line in India has reached Rs. 972 in 2012 and Rs. 1407 in urban India. This year, it was estimated that 29.5 percent of the Indian population lived below the poverty line.

5.In 2014, Rangarajan's panel said that in a country with 38 percent of the population, about 454 million people live in extreme poverty.

About BPL Causes

1.Population explosion: For the past 45 years, the population of India has grown at a rate of 2.2% per year, which means that the population of the country adds to almost 17 million people each year.

2.Low agricultural productivity: Fragmented land tenure, lack of capital, illiteracy about the latest technologies in agriculture, use of traditional farming methods, residues during storage, etc. They have led to low agricultural productivity.

3.Inefficient use of resources: unemployment has also created poverty.
