Full form of DNA is Deoxyribonucleic Acid. DNA is the chemical name for the molecule that actually carries the main genetic information in all living things. The DNA molecule consists of two strands that form intermolecular hydrogen bonding with one another to form a shape known as a double helix.

There are various types of DNA having different functions and use such as.

  1. B – DNA is the most common DNA conformation.
  2. B-DNA is a right-handed helix.
  3. A majority of DNA has a type B conformation under normal physiological conditions.

  2. Where the double helix in a zig-zag pattern winds to the left and Alexander Rich and Andres Wang discovered it.
  3. Z – DNA is located ahead of a gene ‘s starting site and is therefore assumed to play a role in controlling the gene.

DNA Function

  1. DNA stores the information needed to build and control the cell.
  2. The transmission of this information from mother to daughter cells is called vertical gene transfer and it occurs through the process of DNA replication.
  3. DNA is replicated when a cell makes a duplicate copy of its DNA, then the cell divides, resulting in the correct distribution of one DNA copy to each resulting cell.
  4. DNA can also be enzymatically degraded and used as a source of nucleosides and nucleotides for the cell. Unlike other macromolecules, DNA does not serve a structural role in cells.
