Thomas Sutherland 1865 founded the bank of Hong Kong and Shanghai (now called HSBC) in the city of Hong Kong for the benefit of organized banking services. HSBC was the first local-owned bank that operated according to Scottish banking regulations. For the next ten years, HSBC worked on several continents. Over time, HSBC became a banking institution where it began providing loans for infrastructure projects even in the national government.
The 1941 World War disrupted the development of several nations, making Hong Kong one of them. HSBC has played a vital role in strengthening the failed Hong Kong economy. In 1992, HSBC founded a new Holding company under the name HSBC Holdings which later acquired a bank in Midland. With this discovery, HSBC headquarters shifted from Hong Kong to London in 1992. With the acquisition of Midland, the largest commercial bank in the United Kingdom, HSBC made additional purchases, including a US financial company called Household Financial. Apart from this, HSBC has acquired Banco Bamerindus of Brazil, an essential acquisition in South America.
In 1998, HSBC was modified to convert to a composite form, thus producing a hexagonal symbol and HSBC letters. HSBC was also the first foreign bank to operate in India and is also known as the first bank to set up India's first ATM in 1987 in Mumbai.
As of 2019, HSBC had an estimated 8.5 trillion assets in custody. Over the past few years, HSBC has closed several branches in India, Britain, etc. In 2020, HSBC announced another 35,000 job cuts. It also announced the withdrawal of a US bank by selling or closing its remaining 150 branches. HSBC has focused its efforts on working in Asia and growing in the Middle East.
