What is IIT?

The IIT full form is the Indian Institute of Technology, an autonomous public institute imparting higher education. Furthermore, the IIT falls under the administrative control of MHRD and is maintained by the Central Government. At present, there are 23 IITs present in India across various states.

Also, IITs are governed by the Institute of Technology Act 1961, which announced IIT as an institute of national importance. Some of the key details associated with the IITs are also shared below:

  • The first IIT was formed in India in 1950 in Kharagpur.
  • In 1960, there was the inauguration of 4 new campuses in Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi.
  • IIT Guwahati was founded in 1994

  • In 2003, five institutes were converted into IITs.
  • Eight new IITs were formed in 2008.
  • Six new IITs were founded in 2015.

What is NIT?

The NIT full form is the National Institute of Technology, an autonomous public institution controlled and managed by the central government. Furthermore, NIT is governed by the National Institute of Technology Act, 2007, which is declared as an institute of national importance.

Presently there are a total of 31 NITs in India. Previously, NIT was also popularly known as the regional engineering college, founded at the time of the second 5-year plan. Some of the key details associated with the NITs are also shared below:

IITs and NITs - Admission Process

Candidates who want to secure admission into IIT or NIT should clear the entrance exams along with the admission process of the respective institutes. Basically, there are majorly two entrance exams to get admission to IITs and NITs for engineering courses.

Furthermore, the entrance exams such as IIT JEE Mains and IIT JEE Advanced are conducted for admission. With this, those who clear the JEE mains will be qualified for NITs only. However, candidates who wish to secure admission to IIT should also pass the JEE advanced exam.

Q. What GATE score is needed to get admission to IITs and NITs in India?

Ans. The GATE cutoff for admission to IITs and NITs in India varies for different institutes. Generally, a score of 750 or more may qualify a student for admission to the IIT and NIT colleges in India.

Q. Do I need to give GATE for M.Tech. admission in India?

Ans. Yes, qualifying GATE with an appropriate score is mandatory to obtain M.Tech. admission to top colleges in India.

Q. Can I join IITs without giving GATE?

Ans. Engineering graduates from IITs don't need to give the GATE exam. They can take a written test to apply for IITs. Students who completed their B.Tech degree from other universities with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher in the past two years can skip GATE and directly appear for the written test and personal interview round.

Q. Is a GATE score of 700 good?

Ans. A GATE score in the 700s is considered decent and has a good chance of getting admission to popular courses in IITs and NITs under the list of colleges according to GATE score.
