The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has introduced a new Robotics & Automation (RA) paper for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The addition of the new paper is one of the key highlights of the GATE 2027 notification and reflects the institute's efforts to update the examination in line with evolving academic and technological fields. Along with the announcement, IIT Madras has released the official examination schedule, with GOAPS registration beginning on August 14, 2026, and has advised candidates to refer to the official information brochure for paper details, eligibility, and other important guidelines.

According to the official announcement, this is one of the key changes introduced in this year's examination. IIT Madras has also revised the syllabus for the GATE test papers after five years to align with evolving academic and industry requirements.
Apart from introducing the Robotics & Automation paper, IIT Madras has also made another important change.
The Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper will no longer be offered as an independent paper. Instead, it has been converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE) from GATE 2027.
The GATE 2027 notification states that changes have been made to the XE (Engineering Sciences), XH (Humanities & Social Sciences), and XL (Life Sciences) sectional paper codes. Candidates should refer to the official information brochure for the updated paper codes and section combinations before submitting their application.
The GATE 2027 syllabi for the test papers have been revised. Candidates are advised to check the updated syllabus available on the official GATE 2027 website before starting their preparation or submitting the application form.

As per the official information available:
There is no upper or lower age limit for appearing in GATE.
Candidates who have completed or are in the final year of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Arts, or Commerce are eligible.
Third-year BTech students are also eligible under the revised eligibility norms.
The official exam pattern remains unchanged.
