GATE Cut Off 2026: Difference Between Qualifying and Admission Cut Offs

The conducting authority releases two types of cut off marks for GATE Exam i.e. qualifying cut off and admission cut off. Candidates must distinguish between the GATE qualifying Cut Off and the admission Cut Off. The GATE 2026 Cut Off represents the minimum score required to meet the eligibility criteria set by the institutes. On the other hand, the GATE admission Cut Off ensures consideration for admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.

The conducting authority determines the qualifying Cut Off, which can be accessed on GOAPS. At the same time, individual participating institutes announce the admission Cut Offs, which can be found on their respective counseling portals, such as CCMT/COAPS.

Qualifying GATE Cut Offs Admission GATE Cut Offs
GATE Qualifying Cut Off are Termed as the eligibility Cut Off for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs; it denotes the minimum marks required for a candidate to be considered eligible for admission. It represents the predetermined range of opening and closing ranks set by the participating institutes to select candidates.
Just reaching the qualifying Cut Off does not ensure that the candidate will be chosen for admission. Meeting the admission GATE Cut Off does not mean the candidate will be selected.
It should be fixed before the announcement of GATE results. It is fixed after the declaration of the GATE result date.
It is announced by the conducting IIT and available on GOAPS Individual participating institutes release it, and available on their respective counseling portal – CCMT/COAP.
It includes qualifying marks for each paper. It includes opening and closing ranks for courses offered at participating institutes

Factors Affecting the GATE Cut Off

Every year, there is a slight variation in the GATE Cut Off. This is because numerous factors affect this Cut Off, which is not the same every year. These factors include the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level, and the number of candidates that can score well. The factors that directly impact the GATE Cut Off are-

Difficulty level

If the difficulty level of a particular GATE exam is high, then the Cut Offs are generally low that year. This is because, due to the incredible difficulty of the exam, fewer students will be able to score well. As a result, not many students can clear the exam. So generally, Cut Offs are kept low if the difficulty level of the exams is high.

Number of Students taken the Exam

If the number of students is high, then it means that there will be more competition. As a result, more students will compete for a particular seat. So eventually, Cut Offs will be high that specific year.

Availability of Seats

Seat availability is a significant parameter in deciding the GATE Cut Off. Every institution in India has a particular number of seats it can allot to students. Sometimes the seats are fewer and sometimes more. Cut Offs are generally high if the number of seats available for a specific year is low.

Category of the student

It is essential to know that everyone appearing for the GATE exam is not subjected to the same Cut Off. Students belonging to different categories have different subjective Cut Offs. For example, the Cut Offs for general students are comparatively higher than that of students belonging to the SC and ST.
