The History of ISRO

The history of ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organization, traces back to the establishment of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) in 1962 by Jawaharlal Nehru under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

Further, INCOSPAR was developed under the Atomic Energy Department and renamed ISRO in 1969.

The Space Commission and Space Department (abbreviated as DOS) were created in 1972, along with ISRO. The launch of ISRO introduced space exploration initiatives in India. Moreover, ISRO is regulated by the Department of Space (DOS) and reports directly to the Prime Minister of India.
