The academic journey of S Somanath is characterized by his determination and dedication to study. He did his schooling at St. Augustine Secondary School then he enrolled at Maharaja School in Ernakulam for a higher education diploma. During his Schooling, he showed a great interest in studying Physics and Mathematics and decided to start a career in the technical field.
After completing School Education, he enrolled in the Bachelor of Technology program in Mechanical Engineering at TKM School of Engineering. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 and then he decided to pursue a Master Program and got admission to Aerospace Engineering at IISc Bangalore.

S Somanath was appointed at LPSC and VSSC including Project Manager-Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Deputy Director for Structures Entity/Propulsion & Space Ordnance Entity, and Project Director, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mk-III).
He was associated with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) project during its initial phase and was the Deputy Director of Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity up to November 2014. He was also appointed as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in June 2015.
S Somanath also served the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) as its Director. Now, he is currently designated as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization to provide success in various space missions of the nation.
