To be eligible for UPSC ESE 2027, candidates must satisfy the prescribed nationality, age, and educational qualification requirements. The examination is conducted for four engineering categories: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

UPSC ESE Eligibility Criteria 2027

The UPSC ESE Eligibility Criteria 2027 defines the minimum requirements that candidates must fulfil to appear for the Engineering Services Examination. Candidates should satisfy the nationality, age, educational qualification, and other conditions prescribed in the official notification.

The main eligibility requirements for UPSC ESE 2027 are given below:

• Candidate must satisfy the prescribed nationality requirements.
• Candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained 30 years as on 01 January 2027, subject to applicable age relaxations.
• Candidate must possess the prescribed educational qualification.
• Candidate must satisfy the medical and physical standards applicable to the concerned service or post.
• Candidates claiming reservation or age relaxation must possess the required certificates in the prescribed format.

UPSC ESE 2027 Nationality

According to the UPSC ESE 2027 notification, a candidate must be either a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 01 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to the categories other than Indian citizens may be required to produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. Such candidates may be admitted to the examination provisionally, but appointment is subject to the required eligibility certificate.

The nationality categories prescribed for UPSC ESE 2027 include:

(a) A citizen of India, or

(b) A subject of Nepal, or

(c) A subject of Bhutan, or

(d) A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

(e) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

UPSC ESE 2027 Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for UPSC ESE 2027 must possess the educational qualification prescribed by the Commission. The minimum educational qualification generally requires an Engineering degree from a recognised institution or one of the other qualifications specifically mentioned in the notification.

For certain posts under the Indian Naval Armament Service and Indian Radio Regulatory Service, candidates may also possess the specific M.Sc. qualifications mentioned in the UPSC ESE 2027 notification.

Can B.Tech Students Apply for UPSC ESE 2027?

Yes, candidates holding an eligible Engineering degree can apply for UPSC ESE 2027, provided they fulfil the prescribed age, nationality, and other eligibility conditions. The Engineering degree must meet the recognition requirements specified in the official notification.

UPSC ESE 2027 Age Limit

For UPSC ESE 2027, candidates must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 01 January 2027. Therefore, candidates must have been born not earlier than 02 January 1997 and not later than 01 January 2006.

UPSC ESE Age Limit for General, OBC, SC/ST 2027

The general upper age limit for UPSC ESE 2027 is 30 years. Candidates belonging to eligible reserved categories and other specified categories can receive age relaxation according to the conditions prescribed by the Government and UPSC.

In addition to the category-wise relaxations, the UPSC ESE 2027 notification provides specific age relaxation provisions for eligible Government servants. Under the prescribed conditions, the upper age limit can be relaxed up to 35 years for certain Government employees.

UPSC ESE 2027 Age Relaxation for Government Servants

The upper age limit of 30 years can be relaxed up to 35 years for eligible Government servants belonging to the categories and departments specified in the UPSC ESE 2027 notification. The relaxation is subject to conditions relating to the nature and duration of service.

The notification specifies that eligible candidates may include permanent Government employees and candidates who have been continuously in temporary service on a regular basis for at least three years as on 01 January 2027, subject to the prescribed conditions.

UPSC ESE 2027 Medical Examination

Candidates who qualify through the written stages and are called for the Personality Test/Interview are required to satisfy the medical standards prescribed for the concerned Engineering Services and Posts. The applicable medical requirements may vary according to the service or post.

Final allocation to services and posts is subject to the prescribed eligibility and medical fitness requirements.

UPSC ESE 2027 Physical Standards

Candidates must satisfy the physical standards applicable to the Engineering Services and Posts for which they are considered. The Functional Classification and Physical Requirements for different services are prescribed under the Rules of the Engineering Services Examination 2027.

Candidates belonging to the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities category should carefully check the functional classification and physical requirements applicable to the services/posts before applying.

UPSC ESE Number of Attempts

The UPSC ESE 2027 notification does not prescribe a separate numerical attempt limit. Candidates can appear for the examination as long as they continue to fulfil the prescribed eligibility conditions, including the applicable age and educational qualification requirements.

UPSC ESE 2027 Reservation and Certificate Requirements

Candidates seeking reservation or age relaxation benefits under SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, or Ex-Servicemen categories must satisfy the prescribed conditions and possess the required certificates in the specified format.

For EWS candidates, the UPSC ESE 2027 notification specifies that the Income & Asset Certificate should be based on Financial Year 2025-26 and issued on or after 01 April 2026, but not later than the closing date of the application, i.e. 06 October 2026.

For OBC candidates, the notification specifies the requirement of an OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate based on the prescribed financial years and issued within the timeline mentioned in the notification.

UPSC ESE 2027 Eligibility for Final Year Students

Candidates who have appeared in an examination that would make them educationally qualified for UPSC ESE 2027 but whose result has not yet been declared may apply, subject to the conditions prescribed by UPSC.

Candidates intending to appear in the qualifying examination may also apply provisionally. However, candidates qualified for the Personality Test/Interview must provide proof of passing the required qualifying examination within the timeline prescribed by the Commission.
