UPSC ESE mains marking scheme and exam pattern are provided below-

• UPSC ESE Mains is a conventional (descriptive) stage with two papers, each carrying 300 marks, totalling 600 marks.

• Each paper has a duration of 3 hours; total exam time is 6 hours.

• Both papers are branch-specific (Engineering Discipline), covering technical subjects of the candidate’s chosen category (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, E&T).

• Each paper typically contains 5–6 long-answer questions with internal choice, ranging from 8-mark conceptual to 60-mark design/multi-part numerical questions.

• No negative marking in Mains; marking follows step-marking with partial credit for correct methodology.

• Scoring depends on SI-unit correctness, neat diagrams, and clear presentation; up to 5% marks may be deducted for illegible handwriting.

• Mains accounts for ~46% of the total 1,300-mark merit (600/1,300), the largest weight in the selection process.
