JEE Advanced 2025 Updates for IIT Aspirants on Eligibility Requirements

The JEE Advanced 2025 eligibility criteria have been officially announced for Indian nationals, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) applicants holding OCI/PIO cards issued before March 4, 2021. All applicants must meet five specific criteria to appear for the exam.

  • Firstly, applicants must rank among the top 250,000 qualifiers in the B.E./B.Tech. Paper 1 of JEE Main 2025. This pool includes category-specific quotas: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 40.5% for OPEN (General). Additionally, 5% horizontal reservation is provided for PwD applicants within each category. The final count of eligible applicants may slightly exceed 2,50,000 in cases of tied scores.
  • Secondly, the age requirement specifies that applicants must be born on or after October 1, 2000, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD applicants, making their cutoff October 1, 1995.
  • Thirdly, applicants must have appeared for their Class XII or equivalent exam for the first time in 2023, 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Students who appeared in 2022 or earlier are ineligible unless their results were delayed by specific board policies.
  • Lastly, applicants who have previously been admitted to any IIT or had their admission canceled are not eligible, except in certain cases where the seat was not finalized through JoSAA.

JEE Advanced 2025 Updates for Foreign Nationals

For foreign nationals, the eligibility rules differ slightly. They can register directly for JEE Advanced 2025 without appearing for JEE Main, provided they meet the age, attempt, and educational criteria. Foreign applicants must be born on or after October 1, 2000, with allowances for mandatory military service in their respective countries.

  • Moreover, these applicants must have completed their Class XII or equivalent examination in 2023, 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. Foreign nationals are considered for supernumerary seats, capped at 10% of the total seats per course, and are not eligible for reservation benefits.
  • The announcement also clarifies that OCI/PIO applicants with cards issued after March 4, 2021, are treated as foreign nationals, while those with cards issued earlier are considered Indian nationals but are not entitled to reservation benefits other than PwD.

However, just weeks later, on November 18, 2024, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) revised this decision, reinstating the earlier rule that restricts students to only two attempts.

This update means that aspirants who have already utilized their two chances in previous years will not be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025. The revision brings back the traditional rule to ensure consistency and fairness in the exam's JEE Advanced eligibility criteria .
