JEE Advanced 2027 Educational Qualification: Key Requirements

You should check your Class 12 qualification, compulsory subjects and year of appearance before applying for JEE Advanced. The 75% and top 20 percentile conditions are specifically important for admission to IITs.

The latest official brochure specifies Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects for the Class 12 or equivalent examination used for IIT admission.

Is 75% Required for JEE Advanced?

The 75% requirement should not be confused with the basic requirement to appear for JEE Advanced. It is part of the Class 12 performance criteria for admission to the IITs.

1. 75% Aggregate Marks

Candidates can meet the Class 12 performance requirement for IIT admission by securing at least 75% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.

For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the corresponding aggregate requirement is 65%, subject to the applicable admission rules.

2. Top 20 Percentile

Instead of the prescribed aggregate percentage, candidates can meet the IIT admission requirement by being within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class 12 or equivalent board examination.

3. Five Subjects Considered

Under the latest criteria, the aggregate and top 20 percentile calculation uses marks in the prescribed five subjects, including:

• Physics

• Chemistry

• Mathematics

• One language

• The fifth subject as specified under the JEE Advanced rules

Candidates should check the year-specific brochure for the exact calculation applicable to their examination.

How Does the Class 12 Improvement Rule Work?

Students appearing for Class 12 improvement examinations need to follow different requirements depending on whether they are using the 75% aggregate route or the top 20 percentile route.

1. Improvement for the 75% Criterion

Candidates can use improvement examination marks to meet the required aggregate percentage, subject to the conditions specified by JEE Advanced for the relevant year.

2. Improvement for Top 20 Percentile

Candidates who want to qualify through the top 20 percentile route after improvement generally need to reappear in all the required subjects so that the percentile can be calculated for the corresponding academic year.

3. Same Examination Board

The latest rules also specify that the marksheets used for meeting these criteria must be issued by the same examination board. Marksheets from separate boards are not accepted for combining marks.

What Else Should You Check for JEE Advanced Eligibility?

Educational qualification is only one part of the eligibility criteria. You should also verify the following conditions for your examination year.

• JEE Main eligibility: The applicable JEE Main qualification requirement must be satisfied.

• Number of attempts: The latest rules allow a maximum of two JEE Advanced attempts in two consecutive years.

• Age limit: JEE Advanced specifies an age requirement along with applicable category-based relaxation.

• Class 12 appearance year: The permitted year of first appearance in Class 12 or equivalent is specified in the examination brochure.

• IIT admission criteria: Qualifying JEE Advanced alone does not remove the separate Class 12 performance requirement for IIT admission.

You should treat May 2027 and the second or third week of May as tentative, not as a confirmed examination date, until the official schedule is released.
