2. If the wavelength of incident light is $\lambda$ and $2\lambda$, then the stopping potential is $3V_0$ and $V_0$ respectively. Find the threshold wavelength.

3.Two equal resistors, when connected in series to a battery, consume a total power of 60 W. If the same resistors are now connected in parallel across the same battery, what will be the total power consumed?

Options:

(1) 15 W

(2) 30 W

(3) 60 W

(4) 240 W

Solution

To solve this, we use the power formula $P = \frac{V^2}{R_{eq}}$, where $V$ is the voltage of the battery and $R_{eq}$ is the equivalent resistance of the circuit. Let each resistor have a resistance $R$.

1. Case 1: Series Connection

When two equal resistors are in series, the equivalent resistance ($R_s$) is:

$$R_s = R + R = 2R$$

The power consumed in series ($P_s$) is given as 60 W:

$$P_s = \frac{V^2}{2R} = 60 \text{ W}$$

From this, we can find that:

$$\frac{V^2}{R} = 120 \text{ W} \quad \text{--- (Eq. 1)}$$

2. Case 2: Parallel Connection

When the same two resistors are in parallel, the equivalent resistance ($R_p$) is:

$$R_p = \frac{R \cdot R}{R + R} = \frac{R}{2}$$

The power consumed in parallel ($P_p$) is:

$$P_p = \frac{V^2}{R_p} = \frac{V^2}{(R/2)} = 2 \left( \frac{V^2}{R} \right)$$

3. Final Calculation

Substitute the value of $\frac{V^2}{R}$ from Equation 1 into the parallel power formula:

$$P_p = 2 \times 120 \text{ W}$$
$$P_p = 240 \text{ W}$$

Correct Option: (4) 240 W
