Supreme Court Verdict On JEE Advanced 2025 Third Attempt Out—A Complete Overview

The Supreme Court has brought clarity to the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2025 , making an exception for some students. Normally, applicants can only attempt the exam twice in two consecutive years. This means those who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2024 can take it again in 2025, but those who appeared in 2023 would not usually be eligible. However, this year, the Supreme Court has allowed a third attempt for certain applicants under special circumstances.

Special Eligibility for JEE Advanced 2025

On January 10, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that students who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 and left their college courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024, can attempt the exam in 2025. This decision came after confusion caused by changes in the rules announced by the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

  • November 5 Announcement : JAB initially announced that students could take JEE Advanced three times in three consecutive years. This decision gave hope to students who completed their Class 12 exams in 2023, 2024, or 2025. Some students even left their college courses to prepare for the exam based on this announcement.
  • November 18 Reversal : Just two weeks later, JAB changed its decision and reduced the attempt limit back to two. This left many students in a tough situation, as they had already made life-changing decisions based on the earlier promise.

Supreme Court’s Decision

The Supreme Court identified the impact of JAB’s sudden reversal on students. While it did not question JAB’s authority to change the rules, the Court stated that students who left their courses during this short period (November 5–18, 2024) should not be penalized for relying on JAB’s earlier assurance. As a result, students who:

  • Took the JEE Advanced exam in 2023, and
  • Withdrew from their courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024,

will be allowed to register for JEE Advanced 2025, even if it will be their third attempt.

What Does This Mean for Other Students?

For all other JEE Advanced 2025 aspirants, the original rule of two attempts in two consecutive years remains unchanged. This means:

  • Students who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2024 can take it again in 2025.
  • Students who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 but did not withdraw from their courses during the specified period are not eligible for 2025.

The Supreme Court’s decision provides relief to a specific group of students affected by JAB’s rule change. Those who are planning to appear for JEE Advanced 2025, it’s important to check the detailed JEE Advanced Eligibility 2025 carefully. The SC's decision aims to ensure fairness for students who made significant choices based on earlier promises while maintaining the integrity of the exam’s rules for everyone else.

What is the JEE Advanced 2025 Attempt Limit?

The question "What is the JEE Advanced 2025 Attempt Limit?" has been in the spotlight this year due to changes in the rules. Normally, applicants can take the JEE Advanced exam twice in two consecutive years. However, last year in November, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) announced an update, allowing students to attempt the exam three times in three consecutive years. Later on, JAB reversed this decision and restored the original two-attempt rule.

However, recently the Supreme Court issued a verdict granting an important exception to the eligibility criteria. Students who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 and withdrew from their courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024, are now allowed to attempt the exam in 2025.
