What JEE Main 2025 Rank is Required for Admission to Computer Science in NITs?

Admission to the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) branch in NITs through JEE Main is highly competitive. The required rank varies each year depending on factors like seat availability, the number of applicants, and category-wise reservations. Top NITs such as NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal have some of the highest cut-offs for CSE.

For reference, in the previous year, NIT Surathkal admitted students with an All India Rank (AIR) up to 14, while the open-state category’s closing rank was 1615. At NIT Tiruchirappalli, the closing rank for CSE was 1224. Similarly, in NIT Warangal, under the home-state category, students with a rank up to 2804 secured admission in the fifth round of JoSAA counseling. These trends show that a top rank in JEE Main 2025 is going to be important for securing a CSE seat in leading NITs.

Previous Year's JEE Main Rank Required for CSE Admission at NITs

The JEE Main opening and closing ranks for admission to the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) branch at NITs vary each year. These ranks depend on numerous factors, like the number of available seats, the total number of applicants, and the difficulty level of the JEE Main exam. Additionally, admissions are granted under two categories: the home-state quota, which is for students from the state where the NIT is located, and the other-state quota, which applies to students from other states.

Based on the previous year’s JoSAA counseling, the closing ranks for CSE in different NITs were quite different. Some NITs had higher closing ranks, meaning students with lower JEE Main ranks could get admission, while in other NITs, the competition was tougher, requiring a much better rank. Check out the closing ranks based on the last round of JoSAA counseling to know the JEE Main rank required for CSE admission at NITs:

  • In NIT Manipur, the closing rank for home-state students was 15,616, whereas for students from other states, it was 30,611.

  • NIT Sikkim had a similar trend, with 23,245 home-state students and 28,284 for other-state students.

Some NITs had more competitive cut-off ranks, meaning students needed better JEE Main ranks to secure a seat in CSE.

  • NIT Silchar was also competitive, with 6,492 for home-state candidates and 26,892 for other-state applicants.
