Preparing for the IBPS SO Law Officer Exam 2026 can feel confusing, especially when candidates are unsure about the different stages, qualifying criteria, interview shortlisting, and final merit calculation. Understanding the selection process is important because each stage plays a role in determining your final selection.
The IBPS SO Law Officer Selection Process 2026 consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination, the Main Examination, and the Interview. This article explains the complete process, including the exam pattern, shortlisting criteria, and final selection methodology, helping you plan your preparation more effectively.
The recruitment process includes the following stages:
Stage 1: Online Preliminary Examination (Qualifying)
Stage 2: Online Main Examination
Stage 3: Personal Interview
Candidates who clear each stage according to the prescribed cut-off marks become eligible for the next phase.
The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the selection process. It is conducted online and tests candidates on their language skills, reasoning ability, banking awareness, and basic legal knowledge.
Unlike some other Specialist Officer posts, Law Officer candidates are tested on General Awareness with Special Reference to the Banking Industry instead of Quantitative Aptitude. The exam also includes a Professional Knowledge section related to law.

English Language, Reasoning, General Awareness, and the Descriptive Test are qualifying in nature.
Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in these sections.
Professional Knowledge carries the highest weightage and plays the most important role in shortlisting candidates for the interview.
Both the Preliminary and Main Objective examinations have negative marking.
0.25 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.
Attempt only those questions where you are reasonably confident about the answer.
After the Main Examination, IBPS prepares the shortlist based on candidates' performance.
The shortlisting process generally follows these steps:
Candidates must first qualify the required sectional and overall cut-offs.
Those who meet the qualifying criteria are ranked based on their Professional Knowledge score.
Depending on the number of vacancies reported by participating banks, candidates are shortlisted category-wise for the interview.
The Main Examination marks remain confidential until the interview process is completed.
Candidates who are shortlisted based on their Professional Knowledge (Objective) score in the Main Examination, after qualifying all the other mandatory sections, are called for the Common Interview conducted by the participating banks in coordination with IBPS.

Candidates must secure the prescribed minimum qualifying marks in the interview to be considered for the final merit list. The final selection is based on the combined weighted scores of the Professional Knowledge test in the Main Examination (80%) and the Interview (20%), subject to fulfilling all eligibility and qualifying criteria prescribed by IBPS.
The final merit list is prepared by combining the scores of the Main Examination and the Interview.
The weightage is:
Main Examination – 80%
Interview – 20%
Candidates with the highest combined scores are provisionally allotted to participating public sector banks based on their merit, category, and the vacancies available.
Preparing well for the Professional Knowledge section, while also clearing the qualifying sections and performing confidently in the interview, can significantly improve your chances of securing an IBPS SO Law Officer position.
