Judiciary Exams 2026

The Judiciary Exams 2026 select candidates for judicial service positions. The exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview, each testing different skills, from basic legal knowledge to analytical ability and judicial temperament.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Prelims is the first stage to filter candidates for the Mains. The exam consists of objective-type questions (MCQs).

Syllabus:

  • Law Subjects: Core legal topics such as IPC (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), Indian Evidence Act, Code of Civil & Criminal Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Torts, Family Law, along with state-specific local laws.

  • General Knowledge / Current Affairs: History, geography, science, legal updates, and amendments to Indian laws.

  • Language: English (grammar, comprehension, vocabulary) and sometimes regional languages.

Marks obtained in Prelims generally do not count for final merit; this stage only qualifies candidates for the Mains. Some states may apply negative marking for incorrect answers.

Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)

The Mains is the most important stage, testing in-depth legal knowledge and answer-writing skills. The exam consists of subjective / descriptive questions.

Syllabus:

  • Law Subjects: Detailed questions on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, IPC, Indian Evidence Act, Code of Civil & Criminal Procedure, Family Law, Contract Act, Constitutional Law, Sale of Goods, Torts, Jurisprudence, and other minor laws.

  • Procedural Skills: Judgment writing, framing issues, pleadings, drafting, and application of procedural laws.

  • Language Papers: Essays, précis, translation, grammar in English and sometimes regional languages.

  • Legal Current Affairs / General Knowledge: Integrated with legal questions or as separate papers in some states.

Marks obtained in Mains count towards the final merit list.

Stage 3: Viva Voce / Interview

The Interview assesses personality, legal aptitude, and suitability for judicial service. It is an oral examination conducted by a panel appointed by the State High Court or State Public Service Commission.

Assessment Areas:

  • Communication skills and confidence

  • Presence of mind and judicial temperament

  • Ethical values and ability to handle hypothetical scenarios

Marks from the Interview are added to Mains marks to determine final selection, emphasizing the practical application of legal knowledge.
