Maharashtra Civil Judge Eligibility Criteria 2026

Educational Qualification

Applicants must possess a Degree in Law. Specific experience requirements also apply as of April 30, 2026.

  • Advocate / Public Prosecutor / Government Advocate: Must have practiced as an Advocate in the High Court of Bombay or its subordinate courts for at least 3 years. The period of working as a Law Clerk (after provisional enrolment or registration as an Advocate) with High Court Judges or Judicial Officers of subordinate courts will be counted. Practice as an Advocate is reckoned from the date of provisional enrolment with the State Bar Council. Alternatively, candidates must have worked as a Public Prosecutor or Government Advocate for at least 3 years, including any prior period as an Advocate.

  • Ministerial Staff (of High Court of Bombay or subordinate courts, Offices of Government Pleaders, or Legal Assistant and above in Legal Section of Law & Judiciary Department): A minimum of 3 years of service is required after obtaining a Degree in Law.

Furthermore, all candidates must demonstrate excellent proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing Marathi. The ability to fluently translate between Marathi and English is also mandatory.

  • Upload mandatory documents/certificates in PDF format (40-400 KB) as specified: Proof of Name (SSC), Age, Educational Qualification, Socially Backward Class, Valid Non-Creamy Layer Certificate (2025-2029), Eligible PwD certificate/UDID card, Domicile Certificate (for Backward Class claim), Proof of Name Change (SSC), Proof of Marathi Language Knowledge, Small Family Declaration, Prescribed Experience Certificate, and Copy of registration certificate under Bar Council of India/Maharashtra and Goa.

Challans can be generated up to two days after the application deadline if online payment fails.

Maharashtra Civil Judge Selection Process 2026

The selection process for the Civil Judge Junior Division & Judicial Magistrate First Class positions under the Maharashtra Civil Judge Recruitment 2026 is rigorous and multi-staged, designed to identify the most suitable candidates for judicial roles.

  1. Preliminary Examination: This is a screening test consisting of 100 objective multiple-choice questions. Marks obtained in this stage will not contribute to the final selection.

  2. Main Examination: Candidates clearing the preliminary stage will appear for the Main Examination, which is a conventional/descriptive type test carrying 200 marks (two papers of 100 marks each). Candidates are called for this stage in a 1:10 ratio of available posts. To qualify for the interview, General category candidates must score a minimum of 50 marks in each paper, while Backward Categories and PwD candidates need 45% (45 marks) in each paper.

  3. Interview: Qualified candidates from the Main Examination will be called for an interview, which carries 50 marks. Candidates are invited for the interview in a 1:3 ratio of posts. A minimum of 40% (20 marks) in the interview is required for final consideration, with PwD candidates needing 35% (17.5 marks).

The final selection will be based on the combined marks secured in the Main Examination and the Interview.

Maharashtra Civil Judge Salary & Job Profile 2026

Appointed candidates for the Civil Judge Junior Division & Judicial Magistrate First Class posts will receive a competitive pay scale as per Pay Matrix Level J-1, starting at Rs. 77640/-, along with other allowances as per government rules. The appointment includes a probation period of three years. A service bond of Rs. 2,00,000/- is required, committing candidates to serve for three years. Additionally, there is a restriction on legal practice in courts where they served for two years after leaving service.
