Can Final-Year Students Apply for CAT 2026? Eligibility Explained

Final-year students can apply for CAT 2026 if they meet the official eligibility criteria. Learn about required percentage, provisional admission, documents, important registration dates, and conditions for candidates awaiting graduation results as per the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin.
Can Final-Year Students Apply for CAT 2026? Eligibility Explained

The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 is one of India's most prestigious MBA entrance examinations, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Every year, thousands of final-year undergraduate students wonder whether they are eligible to appear for the exam before completing their degree.

The good news is yes—final-year bachelor's degree students can apply for CAT 2026, provided they satisfy the eligibility conditions mentioned in the official CAT 2026 Information Bulletin. However, there are a few important rules regarding provisional admission and document submission that every aspirant should understand.

Can Final-Year Students Apply for CAT 2026?

Yes. Candidates who are currently appearing in the final year of their bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification examination are eligible to apply for CAT 2026.

Additionally, candidates who have completed all degree requirements but are awaiting their final results can also submit the CAT 2026 application.

However, such candidates will receive provisional admission if selected and must later provide proof that they have completed all the requirements of their bachelor's degree.

CAT 2026 Eligibility for Final-Year Students

According to the official CAT 2026 Information Bulletin, candidates must satisfy one of the following eligibility conditions:

Eligibility Condition Eligible for CAT 2026?
Completed Bachelor's degree with required percentage Yes
Final-year Bachelor's degree student Yes
Completed degree requirements and awaiting results Yes
Completed CA/CS/CMA/FIAI with required percentage Yes

Minimum Percentage Required

The minimum qualifying marks depend on the candidate's category.

Category Minimum Marks Required
General 50%
EWS 50%
NC-OBC 50%
SC 45%
ST 45%
PwBD 45%

Candidates whose universities award CGPA instead of percentage should follow the conversion formula prescribed by their university. If the university does not provide a conversion method, the percentage will be calculated by dividing the obtained CGPA by the maximum CGPA and multiplying by 100.

What Happens After Selection?

If a final-year student is shortlisted by an IIM or another participating institute, admission will be provisional.

Before joining the programme, the candidate must submit a certificate issued by the Principal or Registrar of the university or institution stating that:

  • All requirements for obtaining the bachelor's degree have been completed.

  • The certificate is issued on or before the date specified by the respective IIM.

Failure to submit this certificate within the prescribed timeline may result in cancellation of admission.

Documents Required from Final-Year Students

Candidates appearing in the final year should keep the following documents ready after selection:

  • Certificate from the Principal/Registrar confirming completion of degree requirements

  • Academic records as required by the institute

  • Category certificate (if applicable)

  • PwBD certificate (if applicable)

Each IIM may ask for additional documents during the admission process.
