The CAT 2026 Selection Process refers to the admission process followed by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) after the Common Admission Test. While CAT serves as the entrance examination, each participating IIM independently determines its eligibility requirements, shortlisting criteria, and admission process for its management programmes.

According to the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin, candidates must first meet the prescribed eligibility requirements before participating in the admission process. After the CAT results are declared, individual IIMs shortlist candidates based on their respective admission policies. Understanding the CAT 2026 Selection Process helps applicants know the different stages involved after the examination.

Stages in the CAT 2026 Selection Process

The CAT 2026 selection process broadly consists of the following stages.

Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Criteria and Apply for CAT 2026

Candidates must satisfy the CAT 2026 eligibility requirements before applying. Applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA.

  • 45% marks for SC, ST, and PwBD candidates.

  • Candidates in the final year of graduation are also eligible to apply, provided they submit the required certificate within the timeline specified by the respective IIM if selected provisionally.

  • Candidates with professional qualifications such as CA, CS, CMA (ICWA), or FIAI are also eligible, subject to the prescribed minimum marks.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, apply for CAT 2026 once registration opens on August 3, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Apply before September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM on the CAT official website to appear in the exam.

Step 2: Appear for CAT 2026

Eligible candidates must register and appear for the CAT 2026 examination. The CAT score serves as an important component in the admission process conducted by participating IIMs.

Step 3: CAT 2026 Result Declaration

After the examination, CAT scorecards will be made available on the official website. According to the official Information Bulletin:

  • Results are likely to be declared in the first week of January 2027.

  • Candidates may also receive an SMS notification.

  • The CAT 2026 score will remain valid until 31 December 2027.

Step 4: Shortlisting by Individual IIMs

After the CAT results are announced, each participating IIM independently prepares its shortlist of candidates. The official bulletin states that CAT performance is an important component of the admission process. However, IIMs may also consider:

  • Previous academic performance

  • Relevant work experience

  • Other institute-specific selection parameters

Since every IIM follows its own admission policy, the shortlisting criteria may differ from one institute to another.

Step 5: Institute-Specific Admission Process

Each IIM conducts its admission process independently. According to the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin:

  • Every IIM determines its own eligibility criteria.

  • Each institute decides its own academic cut-offs.

  • The relative weight assigned to CAT scores and other selection parameters may differ.

  • Candidates should refer to the admission policy published on the respective IIM website.

Important Points About the CAT 2026 Selection Process

Candidates should keep the following official guidelines in mind:

  • Meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not ensure admission or shortlisting.

  • Eligibility may be verified by the IIMs at different stages of the admission process.

  • Candidates must maintain a valid email address and mobile number throughout the selection process.

  • Incorrect information or violation of the admission process may lead to disqualification.

  • Every IIM follows its own admission policy after CAT results are declared.
