CAT Eligibility Criteria 2023 For Final Year Students

Candidates who have finished their bachelor’s degree programs and are awaiting results and pursuing the last year of the bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification are both eligible to apply for CAT 2023. However, these candidates will only be permitted to join the program provisionally with the condition that they will submit a certificate from their university's principal or registrar stating that they have satisfied all the requirements for a bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification as of the certificate's issue date.

CAT Eligibility Criteria 2023 - Marks Calculation

The CAT Eligibility Criteria for 2023 includes a specific aspect of calculating marks or percentages. This calculation hinges upon the individual practices of the institutions or universities where candidates have completed their Bachelor's degrees. Here's how it works:
  • Many universities and institutions have their own systems for calculating a student's percentage based on their grades or CGPA. In such cases, CAT authorities will rely on the practices certified by these educational institutions to determine the candidate's percentage.
  • Conversion from CGPA to Percentage: If your university or institution doesn't have a specific conversion method, you can calculate your percentage by dividing your CGPA by the maximum CGPA attainable and then multiplying the result by 100. For example, consider a candidate with a CGPA of 8.8 out of a maximum of 10. The calculation would be: 8.8/10 = 0.88, then multiply this by 100 to get a percentage of 0.88 X 100 = 88%.

Who is Not Eligible for CAT 2023?

  • If a candidate is currently in the process of completing their professional degree (such as CS, CA, or ICWA) without having already obtained their bachelor's degree, they are not eligible for CAT 2023.
  • Individuals who are simultaneously pursuing both a bachelor's degree and a professional degree but have not yet successfully completed either of them are also ineligible for CAT 2023.
  • Candidates whose scores in their bachelor's degree fall below 50% (or 45% for SC/ ST/ PwD candidates) do not meet the eligibility criteria for applying to CAT
  • If a candidate's degree is not recognized by MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), or UGC (University Grants Commission), they will be deemed ineligible for the CAT examination.

CAT Eligibility Criteria - Work Experience Requirements

Candidates are not required to possess any prior work experience to be eligible for CAT 2023. Even if the CAT Application Form for 2023 requests information about work experience, fulfilling this condition is not obligatory. It's worth noting that some IIMs may assign a certain level of importance to work experience during the final selection process. However, the exact weightage for work experience has not been disclosed, and it may differ from one IIM to another.

Differences Between IIM Eligibility and CAT Eligibility

Regarding eligibility criteria for IIMs and the CAT exam, there are some variations that candidates aspiring to study at IIMs should be mindful of. While both the CAT exam and IIMs do not impose any age restrictions, there is a notable difference in the academic qualification criteria. The CAT exam accepts a two-year bachelor's degree, but IIMs mandate a three-year bachelor's degree for admission to their management programs. Apart from this distinction in the duration of the bachelor's degree, there are no other disparities between the eligibility criteria for the CAT exam and the eligibility criteria for admission to IIMs.

CAT Registration 2023

Applicants must complete their CAT registration and application process within the time specified in the CAT official notification. Candidates must fill out the CAT application form with all necessary information, upload the required documents, and pay the appropriate fees based on their category. Candidates can choose their preferred test centre locations for the CAT exam during application. It is to be noted that after CAT registration, there will be no consideration for changing the category.
