The XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is one of India's leading national-level MBA entrance examinations. Conducted annually by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI), XAT scores are used for admission to prestigious MBA/PGDM programs at XLRI Jamshedpur, XLRI Delhi-NCR, and over 250 other top-tier business schools across India (such as XIMB, IMT, and TAPMI).

One of the reasons XAT attracts over a hundred thousand applicants is its inclusive and flexible eligibility criteria:
Educational Qualification: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree of minimum three years' duration or equivalent in any discipline from a university recognised by the UGC or an equivalent statutory authority.
Minimum Percentage: Unlike some other management tests, XAT imposes no minimum percentage requirements for graduation to register.
Final Year Students: Students appearing for their final year undergraduate examinations or awaiting results are fully eligible to apply, provided they complete their degree requisites within the timeline stipulated by the institutions.
Age Limit & Work Experience: There is no upper age limit, and no prior work experience is required to take the test.
The application process is conducted completely online. Based on the previous year's pricing structure, the provisional fee structure is outlined below:
Basic XAT Registration Fee: ₹2,200 (Applicable to all applicants)
XLRI Programme Application Fee: + ₹200 extra per specific program (e.g., Business Management or Human Resource Management) if applying directly to XLRI.
GMAT/GRE Indian Applicants (PGDM-GM only): ₹2,500
NRI / Foreign Candidates (applying via GMAT): ₹5,000
Note: Registration fees are traditionally non-refundable, and changing exam slots or test-centre preferences post-submission is usually not permitted.
Based on the previous notification, the exam is expected to last around 180 minutes. The final duration will be confirmed in the official XAT 2027 notification.
Expected Test Structure
The exam typically splits into two main sections:
Part 1 (Timed Section): Consists of core aptitude subjects that impact your final overall percentile.
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR): ~26 questions
Decision Making (DM): ~21 questions
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA & DI): ~28 questions
Part 2 (General Knowledge & Essay):
General Knowledge (GK): ~20 to 25 questions (Does not count toward the primary cutoff percentile but is used during the interview stage).
Essay Writing: 1 descriptive prompt (evaluated primarily during the second-stage selection by specific colleges).
Marking Scheme:
+1.00 mark for every correct answer.
-0.25 mark for every incorrect answer in Part 1.
-0.10 mark penalty for consecutive unattempted questions if a candidate leaves more than 8 questions blank.
No negative marking applies to the General Knowledge section.
Syllabus Highlights:
VA & LR: Focuses heavily on Reading Comprehension (including complex articles and poems), critical reasoning, inference, para-jumbles, and vocabulary.
Decision Making: Presents business caselets, ethical dilemmas, administrative problems, and financial situational scenarios that require balanced judgments.
QA & DI: Core emphasis on arithmetic (percentages, profit & loss, averages), algebra, geometry, number systems, and interpretation of graphs, charts, and tables.
GK: Evenly split between Static GK (History, Geography, Science) and Current Affairs (Business, Economy, International politics over the past year).
