NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Footprints without Feet Chapter 8 Overview

The narrative describes a young lawyer named Man. There once was a lawyer who worked at a reputable firm in the town upon his graduation from law school. There, he worked as an assistant clerk. Since he occasionally had to cope with tense situations, he dreaded sending out summonses. One day he had to deliver a summons to Oliver Lutkins. He lived in the little village of New Mullion. He arrived in a village that seemed abandoned and forlorn. On a platform, the attorney spotted a grinning hack driver. When he asked around, he discovered that Lutkins was a crafty guy who had taken out loans from several different places. From the lawyer, the hacker inferred that he would have come to deliver a court summons to Lutkin. The lawyer decided to follow the hack driver and search for Lutkins. The lawyer was forced to chase after Lutkins after Bill, the hacker, maneuvered him around. After Fritz's store, they proceeded to Gustaff's barbershop. They bought cigars and left when they couldn't find Gustaff at his residence later. Bill suggested that the lawyer have his meals delivered by his wife in the afternoon, as it would be more cost-effective than dining out. They went to Wade's Hill, a beautiful location, for lunch. The attorney was now certain that Bill was, in fact, a good-hearted and empathic person. Later, they took a car to Lutkins's mother's house, but she was a nasty woman who was about to beat them with an iron rod. Later, they took a car to Lutkins's mother's house, but she was a nasty woman who was about to beat them with an iron rod. At last, the attorney left without having given Lutkins the summons. His Chief harshly chastised him the following day, and he was sent back to New Mullion with a colleague who was acquainted with Lutkins. After the attorney showed up at the station, he thanked Bill for helping with the Lutkins search. At this point, his colleague told him that Oliver Lutkins was the hack driver. The attorney felt guilty about his behavior.

NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Footprints without Feet Chapter 8

1. Why is the lawyer sent to New Mullion? What does he first think about the place?

Oliver Lutkins was called to testify in a court case, so the attorney was dispatched to New Mullion to serve him with a summons. Here was where he had expected to see a charming little village.

2. Who befriends him? Where does he take him?

The lawyer became friends with a delivery worker who identified himself as Bill. He claimed to know Lutkins and promised to help the attorney find him. He took him somewhere Lutkins was known to visit or had been observed. Before bringing Lutkins to Oliver's mother's home, he took him to a few other places, including the pool room, Gustaff's barbershop, Gray's barbershop, and Fritz's business, where he played a lot of poker. Conversely, Oliver Lutkins remained undiscovered.

3. What does he say about Lutkins?

Bill told the attorney that Lutkins was not an easy man to capture. He seemed to be up to something all the time. He had never paid a single penny of the debt he owed to Bill and several other people. He went on to say that Oliver was a skilled manipulator and a skilled poker player.

4. What more does Bill say about Lutkins and his family?

Bill said to the attorney that he knew Lutkins's mother. She was a terror, in his words. He related an incident in which he brought her a trunk, and she almost tore his flesh off, thinking he was handling it like a carton of eggs. He added that she measured about nine feet in height and four feet in thickness. She had a lot to say and was an astute thinker. He asserted that Oliver must have known he was being hunted and would have run to his mother's house in fear.

5. Does the narrator serve the summons that day?

No, the storyteller did not deliver the summons that day.

6. Who is Lutkins?

Oliver Lutkins is a robber who resides in the little rural village of New Mullion. He easily tricks the attorney who comes to serve him with a summons, even though he lives in a small town. The driver of the hacker was Oliver Lutkins.

7. When the lawyer reached New Mullion, did ‘Bill’ know that he was looking for Lutkins? When do you think Bill came up with his plan for fooling the lawyer?

Lutkins is a cunning person, as seen by his conduct of duping the lawyer. It seems natural to him not to reveal his true identity to outsiders. Moreover, it seems that he is an expert at tricking novices, having practiced it for years.

8. Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village. How is it that no one lets out the secret? (Hint: Notice that the hack driver asks the lawyer to keep out of sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s.)Can you find other such subtle ways in which Lutkins manipulates the tour?

Lutkin never permits the attorney to travel to the place where the imaginary Lutkins is meant to be at any particular time. Bill has great tools; he can scare the lawyer about Lutkin's mother and spin tales about Lutkin's nomadic lifestyle.

9. Why do you think Lutkins’ neighbors were anxious to meet the lawyer?

Neighbors of Lutkin were cautious about approaching someone who could be easily tricked. They were amused by the lawyer's predicament.

10. After his first day’s experience with the hack driver the lawyer thinks of returning to New Mullion to practice law. Do you think he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit?

Following his first day of work with the hack driver, the attorney had considered going back to New Mullion to continue practicing law. But on his second visit, he discovered that the hacker—who was indeed Lutkins—had conned him. The villagers helped Lutkins with this project. It's possible that the attorney would have changed his mind about going to work after becoming the joke of the community.

11. Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being taken for a ride?

The attorney comes across as a young, inexperienced person. He's still trying to figure out how this awful world operates. He ought to have finished his studies more thoroughly before leaving for the village. If there existed a picture of Lutkin, he might have taken it. It's possible that he checked again with other people before depending on Bill. He could have waited to send Bill on his own to find Lutkin.
