Axilla
Axilla also called the armpit space is region which is infamously associated with body odor because of presence of large number of sweat glands and hairs. It’s a region bounded medially by ribs , laterally by arm, anteriorly by pectoral muscles( chest muscles) and posteriorly by scapula. Many important nerves and vessels of arm pass through this.
Shoulder region
It consist of shoulder joint formed by scapula and humerus bone of arm. It consist of many ligaments and tendons and many muscles of pectoral region act at this joint. Shoulder joint is a hypermobile joint which is useful but we have to pay the price of loss of mobility. So dislocations are common.Scapular region
Scapula is a region on the back of shoulder joint. It’s formed by scapula bone and muscles attached on it. Scapula also forms the shoulder joint so by increasing its mobility the resultant mobility at shoulder joint increases manifold. You can only raise your hands above your shoulder because of the movement of scapula. What is responsible for high mobility of shoulder joint?
It is hypermobile because the corresponding socket is very small as for the ball of humerousm so allowing greater mobility. Movement of scapula also contributes to the mobility of shoulder joint.
What causes winging of scapula?
Damage to the long thoracic nerve leads to paralysis of serratus anterior muscles causing winging of scapula.
