Barrett's Esophagus: a change in the lining of the food pipe which can lead to cancer. Barrett’s esophagus is a change in the cellular structure of your esophagus lining. It’s a risk factor for cancer, but the risk is low. It usually occurs in people with chronic, untreated acid reflux (GERD). Treating the underlying condition can help prevent Barrett’s esophagus from progressing to cancer.

What is Barrett's Esophagus?
Barrett’s esophagus is a change in the cellular structure of your esophagus lining. Your esophagus is the swallowing tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Like all of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract , your esophagus has a protective mucous lining on the inside. But if something irritates this lining for a long time, it can damage the tissues. Sometimes, this damage actually reprograms the cells. These changes affect the structure and appearance of your esophagus lining. To scientists, it now looks more like the lining of your intestines. They call this intestinal metaplasia . Metaplasia is when tissues in your body replace themselves with a different type of tissue that isn’t normally found there. This is a risk factor for cancer . What is GERD( Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition in which the stomach contents move up into the esophagus. Reflux becomes a disease when it causes frequent or severe symptoms or injury. Reflux may damage the esophagus, pharynx or respiratory tract. GERD can cause the tissues lining in your esophagus change to look like intestinal lining. This change happens after long exposure to acid and inflammation. It’s a risk factor for esophageal cancer .Barrett's Esophagus Risk Factors
While the condition is rare overall, there are a number of things that can make you more likely to get Barrett’s esophagus. One is the start of GERD at a younger age, if you've had heartburn symptoms for 10 years or more. Other risk factors include- Obesity . High levels of belly fat, in particular, may raise your chances of Barrett's esophagus.
- Smoking . This causes more stomach acid production and causes your body to make less saliva, which offsets acid. Smoking also weakens the LES.
- Your family history . Some studies point to your genetics, or inherited genes passed down through your family, as a potential risk factor for Barrett's esophagus.
- Age . While being over 50 raises your chances of Barrett's esophagus, most people are in their 60s when they're diagnosed with the condition. The average age at diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus is 55 years.
- Long-term GERD . This is a top risk factor. Experts believe the acidic reflux irritates the lining of the esophagus, leading to changes in the tissue that can result in Barrett's esophagus.
- Your sex . Men are three to four times more likely to get Barrett's esophagus than women.
- Your race . Non-Hispanic white people are more likely to get the condition.
