Heart and Pericardium Function and Anatomy

Your pericardium is a protective, fluid-filled sac that surrounds your heart and helps it function properly. Your pericardium also covers the roots of your major blood vessels as they extend from your heart . Read the article to know more.

Heart and Pericardium Function and Anatomy

Heart, a beautiful organ which has been used by songwriters for centuries, is a very vital organ for our body. Pumping of blood circulates oxygen, nutrients and other important things from your hair to your toes. Even seconds of heart stoppage of the heart could be fatal and it’s called cardiac arrest.

The 4 chambers which keep it organised.

Mammalian heart has four chambers which keep the deoxygenated blood( simply meaning low in oxygen) separate from oxygenated blood (high in oxygen content). Upper two chambers are Atria and the lower two chambers are bigger and more powerful called Ventricles.

Heart has specialised musculature which can beat on its own.

Heart muscles are made of cells called cardiomyocytes , in some specialised regions these cells also have the ability to generate action potential which simply means generating currents which can depolarise the heart muscles and thus making it pump blood. These specialised regions are called Nodes.

Heart also need its own blood supply

Heart has its own blood supply by coronary circulation. A compromise in this could prove fatal and can lead to myocardial infarction more famously known as Heart Attack

Pericardium the envelope of heart

Heart is covered by two layered envelopes called pericardium. It’s like a shock absorber and prevents heart muscles from getting damaged by friction generated during pumping action as it gets rubbed by the thoracic cage . Sometimes the cavity inside the envelope gets filled with fluid due to infections and other causes and can lead to distress to the heart.

Heart and Pericardium FAQs

Why is pressure different in different chambers of the heart?

As both ventricles have to pump blood to different locations like the left ventricle has to pump blood throughout the body greater resistance and right ventricle has to pump it just till lungs so lesser resistance. So greater resistance requires greater pressure to pump.

What is pericardial effusion ?

Pericardial effusion is the collection of fluid in the pericardium due to infection and other causes. This puts pressure on heart and restricts it filling causing failure.

What is heart block?

Heart block happens when the conduction system of the heart which sends impulses throughout the heart doesn't conduct properly leading to slowing down of heart rate and leading to failure.

What are normal heart sounds?

Normal heart sounds are the sounds generated due to pumping action of the heart . The flow of blood and opening and closing of valves produces sound which signifies normal functioning of the heart.
