Introduction to Nervous System

Introduction to nervous system : the chief controlling center of our body.

Nervous system is a collection of neurons , the basic structural and functional unit of our body.  Nervous system  basically has two subdivisions on the basis of location namely central and peripheral nervous system.

Central Nervous system

Yes you guessed it right it’s central(in the center of body) comprising of brain and spinal cord. It’s the chief processing unit. Everything our sensory system perceives gets processed through this and all motor orders originate in this system.

Peripheral Nervous System

It’s on the periphery no rocket science. It helps in innervation of peripheral organs and our sensory system. It’s made up of nerves which are simply the collection of neurons.

On the basis of what type of organs peripheral nervous system innervates it can be subdivided into-

Somatic nervous system

It provides innervation to somatic organs which are under our control like when you lift your finger to point at someone.

Autonomic nervous system

It provides innervation to the autonomic organs which are not in our control like you don’t have to think about taking a breath. It's automatic. Autonomic nervous system is divided into Parasympathetic and Sympathetic nervous systems. These systems are the most interesting of them and are classified differently on the basis of the type of effect they have on the body.

Sympathetic nervous systems

This system prepares the body for emergent conditions . The 3 F ‘Fight’,  ‘Flight’ and ‘Fright’ are associated with this.

Nonsympathetic nervous system

This system is called ‘ the rest and digest system’. Whenever you are resting blood flow from your skeletal muscle is transferred to your digestive system thus helping you recover. There is one more special type of nervous system which is in our intestines, that’s why the phrase “gut feeling” is called the Enteric Nervous System. Scientists call it a brain of its own. So now we have two brains.

Nervous system FAQs

What is a ganglia ?

It’s a collection of cell bodies of neurons in the peripheral nervous system.

Which nervous system provides Flight and Fight response?

Fight and flight response is a protective evolutionary reflex response provided by sympathetic division of autonomic nervous system.

What are Neuroglial cells?

Neuroglial cells are non neuron cells which provide structure and support to nervous system and helps in their repair and function.

What is a reflex?

Reflex is a protective evolutionary response which doesn’t require processing from your brain. It’s an automatic, quick response to some stresses which our body has acquired during the course of evolution.
