How Many Students Appeared For NEET 2023: The National Testing Agency conducted the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2024 for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India and abroad. The exam was held on 5 May 2024, with a re-exam for certain candidates on 23 June 2024. NEET UG 2024 had over 23 lakh candidates who appeared for the test at more than 4,750 centers, in 571 cities. The exam was conducted in 13 languages to ensure wider accessibility. NEET UG is the single entrance test for admission to MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses in India.

 In 2025, the NEET UG exam saw a further increase in participation. According to the official data, approximately 24.8 lakh candidates appeared for the exam, held across 14 languages and numerous centers in India. This rise in the number of candidates highlights the growing interest and competition for medical education seats in India.

The number of students appearing for NEET increased from about 23.33 lakh in 2024 to 25.03 lakh in 2025, which is around a 7% rise. If this same growth keeps going, then in 2026, around 26.8 to 27 lakh students may appear for the exam. This rise shows more students want to become doctors, more coaching centers are available, and medical education is reaching both cities and villages better than before.

NEET 2023 Vs Previous Years 

The appearing students for the NEET exam 2023 has shown a steady increase over the years, typically witnessing a growth rate of almost 10% annually. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the numbers in 2020, leading to a rapid decline. The exam had to be postponed multiple times before finally taking place on September 13, 2020. Despite initially having around 16 lakh registered candidates, only 13.6 lakh students appeared for the exam, marking the lowest growth rate in nearly a decade. In 2021, NEET faced further postponements due to the ongoing pandemic. Despite this, an estimated 16 lakh students registered for the exam, and 15.4 lakh students managed to attend. Notably, the number of registered students increased compared to the previous year after the situation started to normalise. Moving on to the most recent data available, in 2022, a significant rise was observed in the number of NEET registration. Approximately 18.7 lakh students registered for the exam, of which 17.64 lakh students appeared for the test. These trends highlight the impact of external factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, on the number of students appearing for the NEET exam each year. Despite the challenges faced, NEET attracts many aspiring medical students, and the total number of candidates varies annually based on various circumstances and conditions.
