The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Friday, June 12, 2026, announced a set of candidate-friendly changes for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination, which will be held across the country on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The biggest takeaways for medical aspirants: a longer examination window of 195 minutes and double the rough work space inside the question paper booklet.
The measures, NTA said, are based on feedback received from candidates over the years and are designed to make the high-stakes medical entrance exam smoother and more comfortable, without compromising fairness, transparency, or security.
The NEET UG 2026 re-exam will now run from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, giving candidates a total window of 195 minutes — 15 minutes more than the earlier schedule. The extra time is meant to absorb mandatory administrative formalities such as attendance verification, signing at the start and end of the exam, and other invigilation procedures.
In previous years, candidates often complained that these formalities cut into their effective paper-solving time. With the revised 195-minute window, NTA has ensured that the full intended duration to attempt the NEET question paper remains protected.
In a significant change to the question booklet design, NTA has doubled the rough work pages from two to four. NEET aspirants will now have more space for calculations, numerical solving, diagrams, and other workings — a long-standing demand, especially for Physics and Chemistry sections that involve lengthy calculations.
Big Relief for Left-Handed Candidates: New Booklet Layout
Until now, all rough work pages were placed only at the end of the question booklet — an arrangement that left-handed candidates, who make up nearly 10% of examinees, found inconvenient.
Under the redesigned format:
Two rough work pages will appear immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet
Two pages will continue at the end of the booklet
The revised layout will be available in both English and regional language versions of the NEET UG 2026 question paper.
NTA stated that even small, thoughtful improvements in exam design can meaningfully improve a candidate's comfort during the high-pressure hours of the examination. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to conducting NEET UG 2026 in a fair, secure, and candidate-friendly manner for the lakhs of aspirants appearing for the re-test.
Candidates appearing on June 21 are advised to:
Carefully read all instructions printed on the NEET UG 2026 admit card and information bulletin
Reach the exam centre well before reporting time to complete verification formalities
Cooperate fully with invigilators and exam staff for smooth conduct of the test
Avoid carrying any prohibited items to the exam centre
