NMC Streamlines State Counselling Committees To Now Enter Data On Available Seats, Not Medical Colleges

NMC Latest Update: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a critical notification regarding the reporting of seat data, in a significant development aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in the admission process for medical seats. This notification affects the upcoming academic years and introduces substantial changes to the existing system.

The NMC, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the admissions process for medical courses, has communicated a pivotal change to all State Medical Counselling Committees. This change pertains to how data related to available medical seats will be managed.

Transfer to State Counseling Committees

Starting from the next academic year, the responsibility for entering data into the seat matrix will shift from colleges and universities to each State Counseling Committee (SCC), in conjunction with the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This change seeks to streamline the reporting process and enhance transparency.

NMC Request to Medical College Nodal Officers

The NMC has requested that all medical colleges designate a nodal officer to facilitate this transition. These nodal officers will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy of the data entered into the system. It is crucial to note that, as of the academic year 2024-2025, college and university authorities will no longer have the authority to input data regarding the number of available medical seats for admission. The NMC derives its authority from sections 14 and 15 of the NMC Act 2019. These provisions empower the National Medical Commission to regulate how counselling is conducted for admission to MBBS and PG-Medical seats in all medical institutions governed by this Act.

Nodal Officer Responsibilities- NMC Latest Update

Each State Counseling Committee is required to nominate a nodal officer who will oversee the data input process. These nodal officers will bear personal responsibility for the accuracy of the data entered into the system. The NMC has also ensured that this notification reaches all relevant parties by sending copies to the Additional Director General of the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). Common Counseling for Medical Courses

Notably, the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, notified by the NMC on June 02, 2023, emphasize common counselling for admission to graduate medical courses across all institutions in India. This common counselling process will rely on the merit list of the NEET-UG examination. Multiple rounds of counselling may be conducted as deemed necessary. This transformative change in seat data reporting signifies a significant step towards enhancing the transparency and efficiency of the medical admission process in India. The NMC remains committed to improving the quality and fairness of medical education and admissions in the country.
