The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced major changes to the Class 10 and Class 12 board exam format for 2026. The revised pattern shifts focus from memorising answers to assessing how well students understand and apply what they learn. As per the new structure aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, 50 percent of each paper will consist of competency-based questions.
These may include multiple-choice questions, case studies, data analysis, source-based tasks or real-life applications of concepts. Another 20 percent of the paper will be MCQs, while the final 30 percent will have short and long descriptive questions. The board stated that the updated framework is designed to test interpretation, analysis and application rather than recall.
CBSE has also confirmed that two board exams a year will be introduced for Class 10 from 2026, giving students more flexibility and additional chances to show academic progress.
The board has released the timetable for the 2026 examinations as well. Both Class 10 and Class 12 exams will start on February 1. Class 10 will open with Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic, while Class 12 begins with Biotechnology, Entrepreneurship and Shorthand (Hindi and English). Class 10 exams will end on March 10, and Class 12 exams will conclude on April 9.
The question paper will now place greater emphasis on understanding and application, with half of the paper made up of competency-based questions such as case studies, data interpretation and real-life problem situations. Another 20 percent of the paper will include multiple-choice questions, while the remaining 30 percent will consist of short and long descriptive answers.
In addition to this shift in exam pattern, CBSE will conduct two board exams a year for Class 10, giving students more flexibility and additional chances to improve their performance. The 2026 exams will begin on February 1 with Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic, and conclude on March 10.
