The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially commenced the second phase of the Class 10 Board Examinations 2026 today. In a landmark move under the new educational policy, over 6.68 lakh candidates are appearing for the exams, starting with the high-stakes Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic papers.
This second board exam cycle is a game-changer for students, offering a safety net to improve their performance or clear subjects without losing an academic year.
According to official data released by CBSE, the response to the second board exam has been overwhelming. A total of 6,68,854 regular candidates have registered for this phase.
Improvement Category: 5,25,655 students (Aiming for higher percentages).
Compartment Category: 85,285 students (Clearing failed subjects).
Dual Category: 57,914 students (Appearing for both improvement and compartment).
Expert Insight: "The high number of improvement registrations proves that students are leveraging the two-exam system to reduce the 'all-or-nothing' pressure of the February session," says a leading Delhi-based educationist.
The second phase is a compact, high-intensity cycle ending in just one week. Here is the official schedule:
| Date | Subject(s) |
| May 15 | Mathematics (Standard & Basic) |
| May 16 | English (Communicative / Language & Literature) |
| May 18 | Science |
| May 19 | Hindi, Regional Languages, Foreign Languages, Home Science |
| May 20 | Sanskrit, Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) |
| May 21 | Social Science (Final Exam) |
Introduced in the 2025-26 academic session, this system is designed to align with the National Education Policy (NEP).
Reduced Stress: Students no longer fear a single "bad day" ruining their future.
Best Score Retention: Students can appear in up to three subjects and choose the best marks between the February and May attempts.
Flexibility: The May attempt is optional, giving students control over their academic journey.
While the exams end on May 21, the evaluation process is expected to be on a fast track. Sources suggest the CBSE Class 10 Second Board Result 2026 will be announced within 30 days of the last exam, likely by the third week of June 2026. This ensures students can proceed with Class 11 admissions without delay.
