The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is set to announce the GATE 2026 Results on March 19, 2026. As candidates prepare for the qualifying cutoff, understanding the intricate marking scheme is vital for calculating potential scores and All India Ranks (AIR).
Unlike other competitive exams, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) follows a strict "no partial marking" policy across all 30 papers.
The exam consists of 1-mark and 2-mark questions. While accuracy is rewarded, incorrect choices in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) lead to significant deductions.
| Question Value | Correct Answer | Wrong Answer (Penalty) |
| 1 Mark MCQ | +1 | -1/3 (0.33) |
| 2 Mark MCQ | +2 | -2/3 (0.66) |
A major relief for aspirants is the absence of negative marking in:
MSQs (Multiple Select Questions): More than one option can be correct. You must select all correct options to get marks.
NAT (Numerical Answer Type): You enter a real number using the virtual keypad.
Note: There is NO partial marking. If an MSQ has three correct options and you only pick two, you receive zero marks.
The GATE 2026 paper structure varies slightly depending on whether your subject includes Engineering Mathematics.
For most papers (excluding specialized Science/Humanities subjects), the weightage is:
General Aptitude (GA): 15 Marks
Engineering Mathematics: 13 Marks
Core Subject Questions: 72 Marks
Total: 100 Marks
For papers like Data Science (DA), Chemistry (CY), and Life Sciences (XL), the distribution shifts:
General Aptitude (GA): 15 Marks
Core Subject Questions: 85 Marks
Total: 100 Marks
