Why Is DigiLocker Mandatory for GATE 2027?

For the first time in GATE's history, IIT Madras has introduced DigiLocker-based verification as a core part of the GATE 2027 registration process on GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System). The move is aimed at reducing document fraud, eliminating manual verification errors, and speeding up identity checks. By pulling verified data directly from Aadhaar-linked government records, the system ensures a candidate's name, date of birth, and photograph match official documents exactly — reducing discrepancies later at the admit card or exam-centre stage.

A note on "mandatory" vs "recommended" wording: The GATE 2027 official website states that DigiLocker registration is "mandatory for all Indian nationals," while the Information Brochure (v1.2) describes it as "recommended... for a smooth process." This has led to some inconsistent media coverage. Regardless of the exact wording, candidates are strongly advised to treat it as compulsory and complete DigiLocker verification well before applying, since the GOAPS portal enforces the requirement through an on-screen prompt during registration.

What Information Does DigiLocker Share With GOAPS?

Once linked, DigiLocker shares the following verified fields with the GATE application system:

  • Full name (as per Aadhaar)

  • Date of birth

  • Registered mobile number

  • Email ID

  • Address

  • Profile photograph

  • Verification ID (Aadhaar/Virtual ID)

Your academic degree is not pulled from DigiLocker — you will still need to upload your qualifying degree, provisional certificate, or bonafide/enrolment certificate separately during the application.

How to Create a New DigiLocker Account (If You Don't Have One)

  1. Visit the official DigiLocker website — digilocker.gov.in — or download the DigiLocker mobile app.

  2. Click on 'Login/Register' and select 'Sign Up'.

  3. Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

  4. Verify via the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

  5. Set a security PIN or password for your account.

  6. Complete your profile with your name, date of birth, and gender as per Aadhaar.

  7. Link your Aadhaar number to complete verification.

Important: If your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is outdated or inaccessible, OTP verification will fail. Update your mobile number with UIDAI before attempting DigiLocker registration.

How to Update an Existing DigiLocker Account

If you already have a DigiLocker account, verify the following before GATE registration begins:

  1. Log in at digilocker.gov.in or via the app.

  2. Check that your name, date of birth, and photo match your Aadhaar and other official documents exactly.

  3. Confirm your linked mobile number and email ID are active and accessible.

  4. Re-verify your Aadhaar link if your account shows as unverified.

  5. Update any mismatched or outdated details before proceeding to GOAPS.

Step-by-Step: Registering for GATE 2027 Through DigiLocker on GOAPS

  1. Visit the official GATE 2027 website and access the GOAPS registration portal.

  2. Enter basic details to create your login credentials (email ID and mobile number).

  3. When prompted, click "Go to DigiLocker".

  4. Log in using your DigiLocker credentials (mobile number + OTP or PIN).

  5. Grant permission for GOAPS to fetch your verified DigiLocker details.

  6. Complete the live facial capture using a webcam or a phone camera (minimum 5 MP), which matches your live photo against your ID to prevent impersonation.

  7. Review the auto-fetched details (name, DOB, address, photo) for accuracy.

  8. Fill in the remaining sections — academic qualifications, choice of one or two test papers (a second paper only from the approved combinations), and preferred exam cities.

  9. Upload your photograph, signature, valid photo ID, and category/PwD certificate (if applicable), following the exact format and size specifications.

  10. Pay the application fee online.

  11. Submit the form and receive your Enrollment ID and temporary password via email/SMS — save this, as it is your identity for the entire GATE 2027 cycle (application, admit card, result, and counselling).

  12. Download and save the confirmation page.

Documents to Keep Ready Before Starting Registration

  • A verified, Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker account

  • Valid photo ID — Aadhaar, PAN card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence

  • Recent passport-size photograph (not older than 3 months, as per specifications)

  • Scanned signature in the correct format and aspect ratio

  • SC/ST certificate, where applicable

  • PwD/UDID certificate, where applicable

  • Dyslexia certificate, for candidates seeking relevant provisions

  • Proof of qualifying degree — degree certificate, provisional certificate, or bonafide/enrolment certificate for final-year/third-year students

Note: OBC-NCL and EWS candidates are not required to upload a category certificate at the application stage.

Common DigiLocker Registration Issues for GATE 2027 (And How to Avoid Them)

  • Name mismatch: If your name in DigiLocker/Aadhaar doesn't exactly match your photo ID or academic certificates, registration can get delayed or blocked. Correct this with UIDAI or the relevant document authority well in advance.

  • Signature format errors: GOAPS checks the height-to-width ratio of your scanned signature programmatically — a signature in the wrong aspect ratio, or written in block capitals, will be rejected even if it visually looks fine.

  • Inaccessible Aadhaar-linked mobile number: OTP verification will fail if you can't access the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Update it before starting.

  • Unverified DigiLocker account: An account that isn't fully verified may not sync correctly with GOAPS — confirm full verification status before the application window opens.

Why You Should Set This Up Early

Since GATE 2027 registration follows a fixed closing date, and identity mismatches typically take a few days to resolve through UIDAI or document correction processes, candidates are strongly advised to create or verify their DigiLocker account at least a few days before applying — not on the day of registration itself, when portal traffic is highest and any error could cost valuable time.
