Lakhs of engineering, science and humanities aspirants who had marked the last week of August on their calendars will have to wait a little longer. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has held back the opening of the GATE 2027 application window and has said the revised registration date will be published shortly. When it goes live, the link will appear on the official portal, gate2027.iitm.ac.in, and the form itself will be filled through the GATE Online Application Processing System, better known as GOAPS.
For candidates, the delay is not idle time. This cycle introduces the biggest procedural overhaul the exam has seen in years, and the aspirants who use the wait to sort out their paperwork will be the ones who submit a clean form on day one.
Every Indian national applying for GATE 2027 must register through DigiLocker. This is not a supporting step running alongside the form; it is the spine of the registration itself. Instead of typing in personal information field by field, applicants will have their records fetched directly from their DigiLocker account.
The details pulled across include the candidate's name, date of birth, mobile number, email address, profile photograph, address and verified identity document number. IIT Madras has framed the change as a way to make registration smoother and cut down on the data-entry errors that have historically forced candidates into the correction window.
The flip side is that any inaccuracy sitting in your DigiLocker record becomes an inaccuracy in your GATE application. A spelling variation in your name, a mobile number you stopped using two years ago, an email address tied to a school account you can no longer access — each of these is now a live risk. The fix is simple but it has to happen before the window opens, not during it. Log in, read every field, and correct what is wrong at the DigiLocker end first.
Candidates who do not have a DigiLocker account should create one immediately and complete the verification. Leaving account creation for the morning the link goes live is the single most avoidable mistake available this season.
A live photograph of the candidate will be taken during the registration process. This is a real-time capture, not an upload, which means the device you sit down with matters.
IIT Madras has advised applicants to use a computer fitted with a working webcam, or a mobile phone with a camera of at least 5 megapixels. A cracked lens, a dim room or a heavily backlit window can all produce a capture that fails verification and stalls the form. Choose a plain background, sit in even daylight if you can, and clean the lens before you begin.
The live capture does not replace the passport-size photograph you upload. Both are part of the process.
Arrange the following before the window opens, scanned and saved on the device you plan to apply from:
A recent passport-size photograph matching the specifications laid down in the information brochure
A scanned signature in the prescribed format
A scanned copy of a valid government photo identity document
SC or ST category certificate, where applicable, in PDF format
UDID certificate, which is preferred, or a PwD certificate, where applicable, in PDF format
Dyslexia certificate, where applicable, in PDF format
On the identity document, one point carries more weight than it appears to. Whichever government ID you upload with the application is the same document you must carry, in original, to the examination centre in February. Accepted options generally include Aadhaar or the Aadhaar Virtual ID, passport, PAN card, voter ID and driving licence. Pick the one you are confident you will physically have in hand on exam day, and pick it now, because changing it later means depending on the correction window.
Only the start of registration has moved. The reported closing dates have held: September 27, 2026 for regular registration, with an extended window into early October carrying a late fee. A correction facility is expected to follow in mid-October, allowing changes to details such as examination city, category and choice of paper.
The examination itself is scheduled across six days in February 2027 — the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st — conducted as a computer-based test in forenoon and afternoon shifts. GATE 2027 will be held across 30 papers, with Robotics and Automation joining the list as a new subject and the syllabus revised after a five-year gap. Candidates should download the paper-wise syllabus PDF from the official portal rather than relying on older coaching material, particularly if they sat GATE in an earlier cycle.
Because the start date has slipped while the deadline has not, the effective application window is now shorter than originally planned. That compression is the real story for aspirants. It removes the cushion that usually absorbs a forgotten certificate or a DigiLocker mismatch.
A qualifying GATE score is the gateway to postgraduate and doctoral admissions at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education, including the IITs, NITs and IIITs. Beyond academics, a long list of Public Sector Undertakings continues to use GATE results as a recruitment filter, which is why the exam draws two very different sets of candidates each year — those chasing an MTech seat and those chasing a public-sector job.
Candidates are advised to monitor gate2027.iitm.ac.in directly for the revised registration date rather than acting on secondary announcements.
