Here is a fact that lakhs of students who didn't crack JEE don't know yet: IIT Madras is actively admitting students for its BS degree programmes right now, and not a single one of them needs a JEE score to get in.
The September 2026 term qualifier application window is live at study.iitm.ac.in, and the deadline to apply is September 27, 2026. This is not a diploma, not a certificate, not a short course. It is a full, four-year Bachelor of Science degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras — a Senate-approved qualification that makes graduates official IIT Madras alumni. And it is open to anyone who has passed Class 12, regardless of age, stream, or academic background.
While every other news outlet covered the May 2026 batch, the September term is the active window right now. If you missed the first batch, this is your second chance this year.
IIT Madras runs four distinct BS programmes under its online degree initiative, all housed at study.iitm.ac.in. Each leads to a full BS degree from IIT Madras and can be pursued either as a standalone qualification or simultaneously alongside an existing undergraduate degree at another institution.
BS in Data Science and Applications — the flagship programme and the world's first 4-year BS degree in Data Science. Over 36,000 students are currently enrolled. It covers statistics, programming, machine learning, business analytics, and applications of data science. Open to students from any stream who have studied English and Mathematics in Class 10.
BS in Electronic Systems — a four-year programme covering electronics, circuit design, embedded systems, and signal processing. Requires Physics and Mathematics in Class 12. Includes mandatory in-person lab sessions of approximately two weeks, making it the most hands-on of the four programmes.
BS in Management and Data Science — designed for students interested in the intersection of business decision-making and data analytics. The academic year runs in three four-month terms (January, May, September), with 12 weeks of coursework, two in-person invigilated quizzes, and a final end-term exam per term.
BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology — the newest and most specialised programme, covering aerospace fundamentals, space systems, and aviation technology. Requires Physics and Mathematics in Class 12.
All four are fully online in terms of coursework delivery, but all require candidates to appear for quizzes and examinations at designated in-person exam centres. This structure is what maintains the academic rigour and credibility of an IIT degree without the traditional campus-bound format.
This is the detail that separates IIT Madras BS from every other engineering admission in India.
There is no JEE requirement. There is no age limit. There is no stream restriction for most programmes. There is no upper limit on the number of applicants since seats are not fixed in the traditional sense.
The baseline requirement is simply this: you must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board. Students who are still in Class 11 can also apply and begin the qualifier process, but will only be formally admitted after passing Class 12.
For the BS in Data Science and Applications specifically: Class 12 from any stream is accepted, provided you have studied English and Mathematics at the Class 10 level.
For the BS in Electronic Systems and BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology: Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 are required.
For the BS in Management and Data Science: Class 12 from any stream is accepted.
Working professionals, graduates pursuing advanced degrees, homemakers returning to education, and students already enrolled in other colleges can all apply. IIT Madras explicitly designed these programmes so that pursuing a BS degree here does not require you to give up your current studies or career.
Every applicant enters through one of two routes.
Route 1 — The Qualifier Process (Regular Entry)
This is the primary and more widely accessible route. After registering on the portal and paying the application fee, you gain access to four weeks of foundational coursework from the programme's first level. You submit weekly assignments, which are graded. At the end of the four weeks, you appear for the Qualifier Exam at an in-person exam centre. If you clear both the assignment score threshold and the Qualifier Exam, you are admitted to the Foundation Level of the BS programme. The Qualifier Exam score also counts as your first quiz score for Foundation Level courses, so clearing it puts you ahead from day one.
Route 2 — JEE Advanced-Based Direct Entry
If you are eligible to appear for, or have recently appeared for, JEE Advanced, you can apply for direct admission to the Foundation Level without going through the full Qualifier process. This fast-tracks entry for candidates who have already demonstrated readiness through the JEE Advanced process. Specific eligibility years vary by programme — check the official portal for the JEE Advanced eligibility window applicable to September 2026 admissions.

Last date to apply for September 2026 term: September 27, 2026.
The total fee across the full four-year BS programme ranges from approximately ₹3.86 lakh to ₹6.12 lakh, depending on the specific programme and the level at which you complete or exit.
For context: the programme has multiple exit points. You can exit with a Foundation-level certificate, a Diploma, a BSc degree, or continue to the full BS degree. The fee you pay corresponds to how far you progress.
Fee waivers are substantial and genuinely accessible. Students from families with an annual income below ₹5 LPA are eligible for up to 75% fee waiver. Reserved category candidates and PwD students qualify for additional concessions. IIT Madras also works with corporate CSR partnerships and alumni donations to provide full-fee scholarships for economically disadvantaged learners. Over 2,000 students currently study for free through these support mechanisms.
Fee waivers are not applicable for students outside India.
An IIT Madras BS degree is not an honorary title or a participation certificate. It is a full degree awarded by one of India's top-ranked technical institutions, carrying the same institutional weight as an on-campus programme. Graduates become part of the official IIT Madras alumni network.
The placement outcomes reflect this. For the BS in Data Science programme, placement rates of 80 to 91% have been reported among students who participated in placement drives. Recruiters include companies like Google, Amazon, Wipro, and hundreds more — over 450 companies have participated in placement activities. Average salary packages range from ₹9 to ₹17 LPA, with the highest reported package reaching ₹1.2 Crore per annum.
For working professionals, the degree also functions as a career accelerator — a formally recognised BS from IIT Madras on a resume signals technical rigour to employers in a way that most other online certificates do not.
This initiative represents one of the most significant democratisation efforts in Indian higher education. The traditional IIT pipeline — Class 10 to 12 focused on JEE, two years of coaching, one shot at a highly competitive entrance exam — has historically been inaccessible to students from rural areas, lower-income families, non-science backgrounds, or those who simply did not prepare for JEE in their formative years.
The BS programmes bypass that barrier entirely. A student from any part of India, from any economic background, from any academic stream, with a Class 12 certificate and a working internet connection, can now sit the same curriculum taught by IIT Madras faculty and graduate with the same institutional credential. As Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses) at IIT Madras, stated at the programme's expansion: these degrees are designed to give students flexibility without compromising on quality, built for a growing need among learners to develop strong foundations in data, technology, and interdisciplinary thinking regardless of their primary degree.
