Updated August 13, 2026, 12:28 PM IST: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has granted conditional approval to existing Colleges of Legal Education (CLEs) in Maharashtra for the 2026-27 academic year, providing a key development in the ongoing MH CET Law CAP 2026 admission process. The approval is subject to the conditions specified by BCI and does not amount to blanket approval for new colleges, courses or additional intake.
The Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has said that the MH CET Law option form-filling portal will remain active until further notice. The revised CAP schedule for 3-year LLB and 5-year LLB admissions will be announced separately after the Maharashtra government's directions are received.
This means candidates who are already participating in the CAP process should not assume that the previously reported allotment dates are final. They should continue monitoring the official CET Cell admission portals for the revised schedule.
The latest development follows a BCI notification dated August 10, 2026, granting one-time conditional approval to existing law colleges for the 2026-27 academic year. The approval applies to existing colleges with their existing approved sanctions and intake, subject to valid university affiliation for 2026-27.
The BCI has also directed the concerned colleges to submit the required documents and pay applicable BCI fees and dues, including approval, inspection, continuation, regularisation, late or default fees wherever applicable, by August 31, 2026.
Importantly, the conditional approval does not automatically regularise previous non-compliance or grant approval to new law colleges, new courses or additional intake. Such cases will require separate consideration and approval.
The MH CET Law option form-filling portal remains active until further notice, according to the latest CET Cell notice reported from the official communication. Candidates participating in the 3-year and 5-year LLB CAP process should use the official portal to check their option-form status and any instructions displayed by the CET Cell.
Candidates should not rely on older deadlines circulating online because the counselling process has been affected by the pending college-approval issue.
| Admission process | Current status |
| 3-year LLB CAP | Revised schedule awaited |
| 5-year LLB CAP | Revised schedule awaited |
| Option form filling | Portal remains active until further notice |
| BCI approval | Existing CLEs granted conditional approval |
| Government directions | Awaited |
| Revised CAP schedule | To be announced separately |
The counselling process was affected by uncertainty over the approval status of participating law colleges.
The BCI had earlier required universities to ensure that affiliated law colleges complied with the applicable legal-education requirements. The Maharashtra Directorate of Higher Education subsequently directed colleges with expired approvals to obtain the required approvals before participating in the state admission process.
The latest BCI decision grants existing colleges a one-time conditional approval for 2026-27, subject to compliance with the stated conditions. The CET Cell is now awaiting further directions from the Maharashtra government before issuing the revised CAP schedule.
Candidates should not treat the earlier Round 1 dates as final until the CET Cell publishes the revised schedule.
Earlier CAP schedules had placed Round 1 allotment at different dates for the 3-year and 5-year LLB programmes. However, the latest CET Cell update says that a revised schedule will be issued separately for both programmes after government directions are received.
Therefore, any August 14 or August 17 allotment date mentioned in older counselling schedules should be labelled old/revised-pending, rather than presented as the current confirmed date.
The BCI decision is significant because it addresses the approval-related uncertainty surrounding existing law colleges participating in the Maharashtra admission process.
However, candidates should understand what the decision does and does not mean.
What it means:
Existing law colleges can receive conditional approval for the 2026-27 academic year.
The approval covers existing approved sanctions and intake, subject to the specified conditions.
Colleges must complete the required compliance formalities.
What it does not mean:
It does not automatically approve new law colleges.
It does not automatically approve new law courses.
It does not permit additional intake without separate approval.
It does not cancel the requirement for valid university affiliation.
It does not itself announce the revised MH CET Law CAP schedule.
These distinctions are important because BCI approval and CET Cell seat-allocation scheduling are separate steps.
Candidates should not assume that every college receiving or seeking approval will immediately appear in the CAP option list.
The BCI's conditional approval specifically concerns existing law colleges, existing approved sanctions and existing intake. New colleges, courses and additional intake require separate consideration and approval.
The CET Cell's final list of participating institutes and the choices available to candidates should therefore be checked on the official CAP portal when the revised counselling process is announced.
Candidates who have already registered for CAP should:
Keep checking the official 3-year or 5-year LLB CAP portal.
Continue monitoring the option-form facility while it remains active.
Review their college preferences before locking or submitting choices.
Do not rely on outdated Round 1 allotment dates.
Wait for the revised schedule before planning reporting or admission activities.
Check whether any changes are made to the list of participating colleges.
Keep their original documents ready for the admission process.
Candidates should also avoid making college choices solely on the basis of old lists because the participating-institute position has changed during the counselling process.
The CET Cell is expected to issue separate revised schedules for the two programmes.
| Feature | 3-Year LLB | 5-Year LLB |
| Eligibility route | Graduate-level law programme | Integrated undergraduate law programme |
| CAP process | Through Maharashtra CET Cell | Through Maharashtra CET Cell |
| Current schedule | Revised schedule awaited | Revised schedule awaited |
| Option form | Portal remains active until further notice | Portal remains active until further notice |
| Next major update | Revised CAP schedule | Revised CAP schedule |
The two counselling processes should therefore be tracked separately once the revised notifications are released.
Candidates should use the Maharashtra State CET Cell's official admission portals for the latest CAP notices, option-form instructions, participating-college information and allotment schedule. The CET Cell's CAP 2026-27 page lists separate admission portals for LL.B.-5 Years (Integrated) and LL.B.-3 Years.

The CET Cell has also advised candidates to use the respective course admission portals for the latest CAP notices, information brochures, helpline details and other admission updates.
The immediate next step is the release of the revised CAP schedule for 3-year and 5-year LLB admissions.
The CET Cell has indicated that the schedules will be announced separately after the required directions from the Maharashtra government are received.
Until then, candidates should continue to monitor the option-form portal and avoid treating dates from earlier CAP schedules as final.
Once the revised schedule is released, candidates will need to follow the new dates for option submission, seat allotment, reporting and subsequent CAP rounds.
The BCI's conditional approval of existing Maharashtra law colleges removes a major hurdle in the MH CET Law CAP 2026 process, but counselling is not back on the old schedule yet.
The option-form portal remains active until further notice, while the Maharashtra CET Cell is awaiting government directions before releasing separate revised schedules for 3-year and 5-year LLB admissions.
For candidates, the most important action now is simple: keep checking the official CAP portal, maintain your college preferences and wait for the revised schedule rather than relying on previously announced allotment dates.
