The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has announced changes to the question paper pattern for Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 from the 2026-27 academic session. Under the revised rules, students will no longer receive internal choices in two-mark very short-answer questions in main subjects. However, internal choices will continue in three-mark and four-mark questions.
The board has also introduced internal choices in five-mark and seven-mark questions for subjects covered under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). The changes were announced through a notice dated October 15, 2026, and will apply to examinations conducted during the 2026-27 academic session.
The revised MPBSE exam pattern is relevant for students preparing for the MP Board Exam 2027, particularly those studying in Classes 10 and 12. Students in Classes 9 and 11 will also need to follow the updated question paper rules for their respective examinations.
The new MP Board internal choice rules distinguish between main subjects and NSQF subjects. The availability of alternative questions will depend on the marks assigned to a question and the category of subject.
| Question category | Revised rule from 2026-27 |
| Main subjects: 2-mark very short-answer questions | Internal choices discontinued |
| Main subjects: 3-mark short-answer questions | Internal choices continue |
| Main subjects: 4-mark long-answer questions | Internal choices continue |
| NSQF subjects: 5-mark long-answer questions | Internal choices introduced |
| NSQF subjects: 7-mark essay-type questions | Internal choices introduced |
The most important change for students in main subjects is the removal of internal choices from two-mark questions. Students will have to answer the questions provided in this category without selecting an alternative question.
The existing internal choice facility will remain available in three-mark and four-mark questions in main subjects. Meanwhile, students taking NSQF subjects will receive internal choices in the specified five-mark and seven-mark question categories.
Students preparing for the MP Board Exam 2027 should understand how the revised internal choice rules affect their preparation. The changes concern the options available while answering questions; they do not mean that two-mark questions have been removed from the paper.
For main subjects, students should focus on strengthening their understanding of short concepts and practising precise answers to very short-answer questions. Since internal choices will no longer be available in the two-mark category, relying on selective preparation may leave gaps in their readiness.
Students should also continue practising three-mark and four-mark questions, where internal choices will remain available. Those studying NSQF subjects should review the revised pattern for five-mark and seven-mark questions and practise answering both descriptive and long-answer questions.
The board's subject-wise syllabus and marking schemes should be used alongside the revised rules. Students should check the latest academic documents issued by MPBSE and follow any further instructions communicated through their schools.
Students can check the revised internal choice rules through the official notification issued by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education.
Official MPBSE notification: Read the revised internal choice rules for Classes 9 to 12
The notification is dated October 15, 2026. Students can also visit the official MPBSE website and open the Academics section to check the syllabus, marking schemes and other examination-related updates for the 2026-27 academic session.
The revised internal choice notification should not be confused with the MP Board's second-examination facility for Classes 10 and 12. The latest notice addresses the question paper pattern and does not announce a change to the examination schedule or the second-examination system.
Under the second-examination arrangement introduced for the 2025-26 academic session, eligible students could appear for another examination to improve their marks or clear subjects they had not passed in the first examination. Students who were absent from the first examination could also appear, subject to the applicable rules.
Students who had passed the first examination could also use the facility to improve their scores. Applications were required to be submitted through the school where the student had registered for the first examination, along with the prescribed fee.
Under the applicable rules described for the second-examination facility, the higher marks obtained in the first and second examinations are considered for the result.
For example, if a student scores 60 marks in a subject in the first examination and 40 marks in the second examination, the higher score of 60 marks is considered. Students should check the relevant examination instructions for eligibility, application requirements and other conditions.
The revised MPBSE question paper pattern introduces specific changes to internal choices rather than removing the facility across all question categories.
Students in Classes 9 to 12 should remember the following points:
Internal choices in two-mark questions in main subjects have been discontinued.
Internal choices will continue in three-mark and four-mark questions in main subjects.
Internal choices have been introduced in five-mark and seven-mark questions in NSQF subjects.
The changes apply from the 2026-27 academic session.
The October 15, 2026, notification concerns question paper rules and does not announce a change to the examination schedule or the second-examination system.
Students should refer to the official notification and the latest subject-wise academic documents before making changes to their examination preparation strategy.
