Two numbers are circulating for the safe score for NEET 2026, seventy-five marks apart, and both are correct. Coaching projections off the provisional answer key put the expected government MBBS cutoff at UR 535 ± 10, OBC 530 ± 10, SC 446 ± 10, ST 430 ± 10. Every explainer on the internet says 610+. Neither is wrong — they answer different questions, and nobody is telling you which one is yours. Meanwhile the seat matrix landed on 14 July with 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 colleges, read everywhere as an 8% jump and therefore as cutoff relief. It isn't: 7,800 of the 9,911 new seats are private. With the Re-NEET UG 2026 result expected at neet.nta.nic.in between 18 and 20 July, here is what each number actually buys.
16 July 2026 — Result not declared. NTA has announced no date. ANI, citing an NTA official, reports the agency is working to declare by 20 July. Ignore any "result out" link circulating today.
15 July 2026 — OMR challenge window closed. More than 10,000 objections filed against the provisional key are under review.
14 July 2026 — MARB notified the UG seat matrix for 2026-27: 1,36,939 seats, 823 colleges, based on approvals as of 13 July, expressly subject to Appeal Committee revision.
13 July 2026 — Scanned OMR sheets and recorded responses released; ₹200 per challenge.
25–28 June 2026 — Provisional answer key and objection window.
21 June 2026 — Re-NEET conducted, 2:00–5:15 PM, 551 Indian cities and 14 abroad, 5,440 centres.
12 May 2026 — NTA cancelled the 3 May exam after a paper leak.
31 July 2026 — Last date for 3 May candidates to confirm fee-refund bank details.
There are two numbers, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in NEET counselling.
| Category | Floor — expected cutoff, last govt MBBS seat | Choice — a seat worth taking | 2025 anchor |
| General / UR | 535 ± 10 | 610+ | AIR 26,178 |
| OBC | 530 ± 10 | 590+ | Not published |
| SC | 446 ± 10 | 520+ | ~AIR 1.36 lakh |

The floor is where the very last government seat closes nationally — deep in mop-up, wherever in India it happens to fall. In 2025 that General seat was at Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences, Kohima, at AIR 26,178. One seat. No choice. Clearing the floor means you're not out. It does not mean you choose.
The choice score is what buys a government seat in your state, in a college you'd name out loud, without depending on a fourth round.
Read it this way: at 545 you are alive. At 610 you are choosing. At 570 — where most of this year's anxiety will sit — you are neither, and your outcome is decided by your state and your category, not by any national number.
This is where coverage will overreach for the next four days.
Coaching institutes scoring students against the provisional key are claiming a top score near 715 — IQuest at 715, Aakash at 711, Gurukripa at 705, Allen reporting sixteen-plus students above 700. Against 2025's 686, that reads as an easier paper. It isn't.
Put the two data points side by side:

The top rose 29 marks. The middle didn't move. The distribution stretched by roughly 30 marks — which is exactly what a Physics section built on lengthy, multi-step numericals does. Elite candidates still crack them. Mid-tier candidates get filtered. The paper separated the top from the middle harder than 2025 did.
So if you are chasing AIIMS, the top-end bands moved and 2025's numbers are stale. If you are chasing any government seat at all, the topper's score is 180 marks and 26,000 ranks away from your problem. It is not evidence about you.
| Year | Topper | General qualifying cutoff |

| 2023 | 720 | 720 – 137 |

| 2025 | 686 | 686 – 144 |
| 2026 | ~715 (unofficial) | Awaited |
2022 paired a 715 topper with a 117 cutoff. 2024 paired a 720 topper with 162. Same top, forty-five marks apart at the bottom. Anyone predicting this year's cutoff from the topper's score is reasoning from a variable that has never predicted it.

78.7% of every new seat sanctioned this year is private. Government intake grew 3.4%; private grew 11.9%. For the first time private and deemed colleges hold a clear majority of India's MBBS capacity. Figures exclude Institutes of National Importance — AIIMS, JIPMER Puducherry, PGIMER Chandigarh.
Twenty-five new colleges were approved: seven government (400 seats) and eighteen private (2,000). Karnataka gained 1,300 seats to reach 15,395 — the largest state increase. Chandigarh's government college gained 50, reaching 200.
What 2,111 government seats actually buy you:
15% goes to All India Quota → ~317 extra AIQ seats nationally, across all categories.
Unreserved takes ~40% of that → ~128 extra UR AIQ seats.
A pool 3.4% deeper pushes the General tail ~300–900 ranks further out from AIR 26,178.
At AIR ~26,000, several hundred candidates sit on every mark → worth about one to three marks.
The other 1,794 seats land in state quota — material if your state gained a college. Karnataka aspirants should recheck their targets. Nationally, it doesn't move the floor.
Method note: steps 2–4 are our estimate, derived from the notified matrix and MCC's 2025 closing ranks. NMC hasn't published a category-wise split of the new intake.

In 2025, 22,09,318 candidates appeared and 12,36,531 qualified — 55.96%. There are 63,296 government MBBS seats. Qualifying is a turnstile, not a ticket.
The mark that buys a government seat moves 60–80 points between paper types. The rank that buys one barely moves.

Your anchor: AIR ~27,000 at the General AIQ tail — 26,178 from 2025, adjusted for the new seats. The moment the final key lands, run your score through a rank predictor. Don't eyeball it against last year's marks.
Don't refresh for a result today. Objections are still under review. NTA doesn't pre-announce a time.
Score your OMR against the provisional key. Hold two numbers: conservative and optimistic.
Convert both to ranks when the final key lands — check against AIR ~27,000 (General AIQ) or your category anchor.
Verify your target college in the new matrix. MARB asked colleges to flag discrepancies before counselling; the matrix can still be revised.
Karnataka: recheck state-quota targets. 1,300 extra seats is this year's one material state-level change.
Documents now: Class 10 and 12 marksheets, category certificate, domicile proof, ID.
