NEET Counselling 2026 has moved to the centre of the medical admission conversation as the National Testing Agency prepares to declare the NEET UG result. The agency has signalled that the re-examination result should be out by July 20, 2026, and has maintained that the MBBS academic calendar will not slip. The moment those NTA scores go live, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will set the undergraduate counselling machinery in motion at mcc.nic.in.
For a large section of candidates, that machinery will not end at MBBS. It will end at BDS — and that is where the decision-making gets harder, because the difference between a strong dental career and a difficult one often comes down to which college a candidate ranked third versus which one they ranked eleventh in the choice-filling window.
The current cycle has been unusual. The examination originally held on May 3 for close to 20 lakh candidates was cancelled following paper-leak allegations, and a re-test was conducted on June 21. The provisional answer key followed on June 25, the objection window closed on June 28, and subject experts are now working through roughly 10,000 individual challenges before the final answer key can be published.
Separately, NTA has begun crediting examination fee refunds to registered candidates. Those who have not yet confirmed or corrected their bank account details have until July 14, 2026 to do so.
Once the final answer key is out, the sequence is predictable: final key → result and scorecard → All India Rank → MCC counselling notification.
This is the part most aspirants under-prepare for.
MCC conducts NEET UG counselling for All India Quota seats, institutional and domicile quota seats of central universities including Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi and the Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia, along with ESIC colleges, Armed Forces Medical College Pune, AIIMS and JIPMER. The process typically runs across four stages — Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and a Stray Vacancy Round — with the number of rounds depending on how many seats remain unfilled.
The steps in each round are the same: registration and fee payment, seat matrix study, choice filling, choice locking, seat allotment result, and institute reporting with document verification.
After every round, seats are allotted on the basis of the candidate's NEET rank, category, applicable reservation norms, the order of preferences submitted, and the seats available at that moment. A high NIRF-ranked college placed low in a preference list will not be allotted ahead of a lower-ranked college placed higher. Preference order is not a wish list; it is an instruction to the software.
The remaining 85% state quota seats and private dental college seats are handled by individual state counselling authorities, on separate timelines.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), published by the Ministry of Education, is the most widely referenced benchmark when BDS aspirants build their choice list. It assesses dental institutions on teaching and learning resources, research output, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
Here is the top 10 in the NIRF Dental category:
| Rank | Institution | Location |
| 1 | All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi | New Delhi, Delhi |
| 2 | Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences | Chennai, Tamil Nadu |
| 3 | Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences | Delhi |
| 4 | Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth | Pune, Maharashtra |
| 5 | Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal | Manipal, Karnataka |
| 6 | A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences | Mangaluru, Karnataka |
| 7 | King George's Medical University | Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh |
| 8 | SRM Dental College | Chennai, Tamil Nadu |
| 9 | Siksha 'O' Anusandhan | Bhubaneswar, Odisha |
| 10 | JSS Dental College and Hospital | Mysuru, Karnataka |
In the 2025 NIRF Dental rankings, AIIMS Delhi held the top position, with Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai at second and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi at third. The rest of the top 10 was completed by Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University, SRM Dental College, Siksha O Anusandhan and JSS Dental College and Hospital.
A ranking table is a starting point, not a strategy. Three things worth weighing:
1. Government versus deemed. AIIMS Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences and King George's Medical University are government institutions with substantially lower fee structures. Saveetha, Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Manipal, A B Shetty, SRM, Siksha O Anusandhan and JSS operate under the deemed-university route, where fees run considerably higher and merit thresholds are typically softer. NIRF does not weigh cost.
2. Rank realism. The top three names attract the sharpest All India Ranks in the AIQ pool. Building a list that contains only top-five colleges is how candidates end up unallotted in Round 1 and negotiating from weakness in the mop-up round.
3. Clinical exposure over brand. For a BDS student, patient footfall in the attached hospital and the intensity of the internship year shape competence more than a position on a table. Institutions attached to large teaching hospitals — KGMU Lucknow, Manipal, JSS — carry real weight here that a rank number does not communicate.
Candidates should assemble originals and photocopies well before the registration window opens: NEET UG 2026 admit card, scorecard and rank letter, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates, birth certificate, valid photo ID, eight passport-sized photographs matching the application form, category certificate where applicable, PwD certificate where applicable, and the provisional allotment letter issued by MCC.
Candidates should monitor neet.nta.nic.in for the final answer key and result, and mcc.nic.in for the counselling notification and round-wise seat matrix. Announcement of the MCC schedule is the trigger for everything else — registration fees, security deposit, choice filling and the first allotment result all follow within a compressed window.
