The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has revised the first-year course fee payment guidelines for candidates allotted postgraduate medical seats through NEET PG Counselling 2026. Under the updated rules, candidates who wish to participate in subsequent counselling rounds for seat upgradation will not have to pay the first-year course fee while waiting for their upgraded allotment.
The revised guidelines bring changes to the fee payment process for candidates who have received seats through NEET PG 2026 counselling. The announcement comes as Round 1 reporting begins and candidates prepare for the upcoming counselling rounds.
The revised NBEMS guidelines clarify the fee payment requirements for candidates based on whether they choose to freeze their allotted seat or opt for an upgrade in the next counselling round.
The important changes are explained below:
| Counselling option | Revised fee payment guidelines |
| Freeze Option | Candidates retaining their allotted seats must pay the first-year annual course fee directly to the allotted NBEMS-accredited hospital. |
| Float Option | Candidates seeking seat upgradation in subsequent rounds are not required to pay the first-year course fee while waiting for the upgraded allotment. |
| After Seat Upgradation | Candidates must pay the applicable first-year course fee directly to the institute they finally choose to join after freezing their upgraded seat. |
Under the updated procedure, NBEMS will no longer collect the first-year course fee in its accounts during the counselling process. The accredited institutes must also avoid collecting this fee from candidates who have selected the Float option.
However, candidates must continue to follow the applicable counselling instructions and complete the required reporting and joining formalities within the prescribed deadlines.
The MCC counselling schedule includes the following important dates for the upcoming rounds:
| Counselling Events | Dates |
| Round 1 Reporting and Joining | October 26 to November 2, 2026 |
| Round 2 Result | November 14, 2026 |
| Round 2 Reporting and Joining | November 16 to 23, 2026 |
| Round 3 Result | December 4, 2026 |
| Round 3 Reporting and Joining | December 5 to 12, 2026 |
| Online Stray Vacancy Round Result | December 24, 2026 |
| Stray Vacancy Round Reporting | December 24 to 31, 2026 |
Candidates should keep track of the MCC counselling schedule for any updates or revisions to the admission process.
The commencement of the training period will depend on the institute where the candidate finally joins.
If the seat is upgraded: The training period will be calculated from the date the candidate reports and joins the upgraded seat.
If the seat is not upgraded: The candidate must join the seat already allotted within the prescribed reporting period.
For candidates retaining their original seats: Their training period will begin from the date they join the allotted institute.
Therefore, candidates should carefully select their counselling options and ensure that their decisions comply with the applicable MCC guidelines.
NBEMS has also clarified the status of its Online Portal for Joining and Registration (OPJR). The portal will remain inactive until the completion of all NEET PG Counselling rounds conducted by MCC.
Once the counselling process concludes, the portal will be activated to enable candidates and hospitals to submit joining details and the necessary documents to NBEMS. A separate notification will be issued to explain the document submission procedure.
Candidates should understand that reporting to their allotted institutions during the prescribed counselling period and submitting joining-related documents through the OPJR portal are separate processes.
The revised fee guidelines offer financial relief to candidates waiting for a possible seat upgrade. However, they must continue to comply with the counselling schedule, reporting deadlines and admission requirements.
