NEET UG 2026 Cancelled: NTA Scraps May 3 Exam Over Paper Leak; 5 Major Announcements for Aspirants

In an unprecedented move that has redefined the 2026 medical admissions cycle, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially declared the NEET UG 2026 examination null and void. The decision, announced today, May 12, follows mounting evidence of a sophisticated paper leak network originating in Rajasthan.

With the integrity of India’s largest medical entrance exam at stake, the NTA and the Ministry of Education have laid out a roadmap to restore student trust.

The 5 Important Announcements by NTA Amid NEET UG Cancellations

1. Absolute Cancellation of the May 3 Exam

The NTA has formally scrapped the May 3 test. Investigative findings from the Rajasthan Police SOG revealed that a "guess paper"—containing nearly 120 matching Chemistry questions—was circulating up to 30 days before the exam. NTA stated that the "present examination process could not be allowed to stand" to ensure a level playing field.

2. CBI Takeover of the Investigation

To uncover the high-level conspiracy, the Union Government has handed the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The probe will examine the multi-state network involving a medical student from Churu and consultants in Kerala and Uttarakhand. This ensures the "masterminds" behind the ₹5 Lakh-per-paper scam are held accountable.

3. Full Fee Refund & Zero Re-test Cost

In a massive relief for 22 lakh families, NTA announced that no additional fee will be charged for the re-examination. Furthermore, the agency has committed to refunding the original fees paid by candidates, bearing the entire cost of the re-conduct through its internal resources—a first in NTA's history.

4. No Fresh Registrations Required

Aspirants do not need to navigate the registration portal again. All existing candidate data, application details, and exam center preferences from the May cycle will be automatically carried forward. This move is aimed at reducing student anxiety and logistical bottlenecks.

5. Fresh Schedule & New Admit Cards

The NTA will soon notify the new NEET UG 2026 exam date. Every candidate will be issued a new Admit Card, rendering the May 3 cards invalid. Students are advised to keep their login credentials ready and check exams.nta.ac.in/NEET regularly for the "Admit Card Download" link.

NEET UG 2026 Cancellation FAQs

Q1: Will the NEET 2026 re-exam be harder than the May 3 paper?

While the difficulty level is managed by experts to remain consistent, the NTA maintains a standard difficulty curve. Aspirants should focus on NCERT as the syllabus remains unchanged.

Q2: Is the CBI investigating the NTA officials as well?

The CBI probe is a "comprehensive inquiry," meaning it will look into the entire chain of command, from paper printing and logistics to the final distribution at centers.

Q3: What happens to the students who didn't use the leaked paper?

Unfortunately, because the leak was widespread across digital platforms, the NTA cannot isolate the beneficiaries. Thus, a universal re-exam for all 22.79 lakh students is the only "fair" solution.

Q4: When can we expect the new NEET 2026 exam date?

Sources suggest the NTA is looking at a 4-6 week window to reorganize logistics. Expect an official notification by the third week of May.

Q5: Will my exam center change for the re-test?

NTA aims to keep the centers the same to avoid travel issues, but certain centers under investigation may be replaced. Check your new admit card for final details.

Final Word for Students

The cancellation is a setback, but it ensures that seats are won by merit, not money. Treat this as a "second chance" to bridge your weak areas. Avoid the noise on social media and trust only the official NTA handles.

Do you think a CBI probe is enough to stop future leaks, or does the entire testing system need a digital overhaul?
